Two dentists have purchased a practice in East Watertown and have plans to bring new life to the dental office which had been only open a couple days a week.

Dr. M. Zakkoom and Dr. M. Kamel took over the Professional Dental Image practice on Bigelow Avenue and seek to become part of the community.

The office has been run by Dr. Juan Jose Graham for many years, but he is retiring in a few months. When they saw that a dental practice was available, Zakkoom and Kamel jumped at the chance.

The office has the latest technology, Zakkoom said, including a machine that makes crowns the same day that a patient comes in.

“Usually the dentist takes an impression of a tooth, sends it away and wait two weeks. It is inconvenient,” Zakkoom said. “Now it takes about an hour.”

The new owners of Professional Dental Image have a few things in common. Both grew up in Dubai, but did not know each other until they came to Boston.

“We started working for the same dental company,” Zakkoom said.

Also, they are both married to anesthesiologists.

Coming to the United States meant starting over, in a way, Zakkoom said.

“I graduated (from dental school) in 1996, but when you move the the U.S. as a dentist you have to start from scratch,” said Zakkoom, who got his American dental degree from University of Illinois at Chicago.

Dr. Kamel has been living in Boston for 12 years. He has a Bachelors and a Masters in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University. He also received his dental degree from Boston University and is a member of the American Dental Associate, and Mass. Dental Society

The pair plans to be open a few days a week and expand their hours as their practice grows. Zakkoom noted that they are always open on the weekends, and are one of the few places in the Boston area open on Sundays.

They take MassHealth insurance and have been accredited or are working on getting credentials for all major insurance companies, Zakkoom said.
