Watertown Field Hockey’s 9-Year Tourney Win Streak Ends With Loss in State Semifinal

BRAINTREE — Something happened Tuesday night for the first time since George W. Bush was in the White House — the Watertown High School field hockey team lost in the State Tournament. 

The Raiders’ nine-plus year, 49 game State Tournament winning streak ended with a 2-1 loss to Dennis-Yarmouth in the MIAA Div. 2 State Semifinal. After one-goal wins in the past two rounds, Watertown again found itself in a dogfight. The Dolphins strategy of packing in on defense and playing for a counterattack frustrated the Raiders in the first half. One of Dennis-Yarmouth’s forays into Watertown territory resulted in two straight corners.

Watertown Faces High Scoring Dennis-Yarmouth in State Semifinal

Once again, the Watertown High School field hockey team is back in the state semifinal, and for the second straight year they face a tough Dennis-Yarmouth. 

Tuesday night’s matchup pits two unbeaten squads. The Raiders come in as North Champs with a record of 20-0-1, while the Dolphins — champions of the South — carry a record of 18-0-3. Watertown won its 11th straight North Section title on Saturday, and the team seeks its 10th straight MIAA Div. 2 State Championship. The road has not been as easy as past years.

North Section Champs! Raiders Score Late to Beat Manchester-Essex

NORTH ANDOVER — The Watertown High School field hockey team had precious few chances in the North Section final on Saturday, but the Raiders converted a second half corner for the game winner against Manchester-Essex. The victory gives Watertown (20-0-1) 11 straight Section crowns, and the team is seeking its 10th straight State Championship. The Raiders’ title hopes, however, looked shaky for much of the battle of undefeated teams.

The Hornets (16-1-5) controlled the play in the first half and the beginning of the second.  Manchester-Essex had five corners in the first half, while the Raiders had none. The Hornets hit the post on one shot, but sophomore goalie Elaine Andrade and the Watertown defense kept the ball out of the net. In the second half the Raiders survived more offensive waves from Manchester-Essex, which got two more corners and twice played with an extra player after a Raiders’ player was carded.

Watertown Wins Thrilling Field Hockey North Semi in Double Overtime

READING  — In the unfamiliar position of facing elimination from the State Tournament, Watertown High School’s field hockey team rallied in the second half of the North Section semifinal and scored a goal in the second overtime to beat Lynnfield 2-1, Thursday night. The Raiders have won nine straight MIAA Div. 2 State Championships, and rarely trailed along the way. The Pioneers, however, did not lie down for defending champs. While the Raiders had controlled most of the play through the game, it was the Pioneers who scored first with 19:27 left in the second half when Ashley Barrett scored on a pass from Brianna Barrett.

Watertown Boys Soccer Team Runs into Plucky Pentucket Team in North Quarterfinal

As the clock ran down at Victory Field Sunday afternoon, Watertown High School’s boys soccer team threw wave after wave and shot after shot at the Pentucket net, but the goal the Raiders desperately needed never came. 

The Sachems knocked Watertown out of the State Tournament with a 1-0 win in the North Section quarterfinal at Victory Field. The loss was a bitter pill for the Raiders, Head Coach Frank Cacia said, especially after winning the North title and reaching the state semifinal a year ago. “I thought we had a very solid team this year, pieces in place, but you’ve got to catch breaks,” Cacia said. “In soccer it’s competitive. Watertown Powers Past Ipswich in Field Hockey Section Quarterfinal

The Raiders took control early in the MIAA Div. 2 North Section quarterfinal against Ipswich and rolled to a 5-0 victory on Sunday morning. 

Top seeded Watertown moved a step closer to its 10th straight State Title by defeating the ninth seeded Tigers at Victory Field. Watertown senior Gabby Venezia struck first, less than three minutes into the game. She was assisted by senior Olivia Lampasona. Twenty minutes later, Venezia found the back of the net again.  She dribbled the ball in and whacked it past the goalie.

Watertown Boys Soccer Overwhelms Gloucester in First Round of State Tournament

The Watertown High School boys soccer team came out firing on all cylinders, and rolled past Gloucester, 5-1, in the first round of the MIAA Div. 3 North Section tournament. 

The fourth seeded Raiders (13-5-1) scored early and often in the game at Victory Field against the 13th seeded Fishermen (5-12-1), Friday night. Watertown’s Caiden Kiani got the Raiders on the scoreboard just 1:53 into the match. Alex Egan got the assist. Less than two minutes later, however, Gloucester tied it up off a set piece.

Raiders Defeat Bishop Fenwick in First Round of State Field Hockey Tournament

A 4-0 win over Bishop Fenwick gave the Watertown High School field hockey team a good start in its effort to win the school’s 10th straight MIAA State Championship. The Raiders, top seed in the Div. 2 North Section bracket, hosted the first round game against the 17th-seeded Crusaders Friday afternoon at Victory Field. Senior Gabby Venezia started the scoring for Watertown with a goal 6:19 into the first half. She scored on a restart in the Bishop Fenwick end when she fired a powerful shot, which hit Fenwick goalie Lauren Wilkinson’s pad, flew into the air, landing near the line and rolled into the net.
