Watertown’s wrestlers continued their successful season going 2-0 last week, with wins over Belmont and Lexington, and competed in a tournament. The Raiders defeated Belmont 45-29 and Lexington 45-30, said Watertown Wrestling Coach Kevin Russo. “They are both solid teams, so the performance by our team was great to see,” Russo said.

Watertown High School’s wrestlers got off to a strong start, beating all but one team in recent head-to-head competitions. The Raiders beat Josiah Quincy Upper School 60-23, Triton 58-10, and Oliver Ames 54-23, while dropping the match to Cambridge Rindge & Latin, 47-30. Leading point scorer so far is Senior Jimmy Shrestha, said Watertown Wrestling Coach Kevin Russo. “He is 4-0 on the season in dual meets,” Russo said.

Five Watertown Wrestlers Place in First Tournament of Season

The Watertown wrestlers had a successful return to the mats when five Raiders placed in the top five at the Wakefield Lisitano Tournament on Dec. 13. Jimmy Shrestha and Hagop Shabazyan each finished second, while Fahad Khan and Billy Werra placed third, and Ruben Kostanyan got fifth place, said Watertown Wrestling Coach Kevin Russo.

Watertown Wrestler Wins U12 Girls Youth New England Wrestling Championship

Watertown’s Evelyn Mancilikli took second place at the stats girls U15 wrestling meet, and went on to win the U12 Youth New England Wrestling Championship. Mancilikli, who is 11, competed in the 185 pound division for the Waltham Wrestling Club and got second place at.

Senior Tessa Master made more history for the Watertown High School wrestling program by becoming the school’s highest finisher at the New England Wrestling Championships — improving on her junior-year performance. She was joined in Providence, Rhode Island, by fellow senior Brady Gleason, the first Raider boys wrestler to make the regional meet.
