Tuesday night, the City Council will vote on the water and sewer rates for residents and commercial customers in town. An increase is proposed, but not as much as previously estimated.
The City Council will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8 in City Hall. Remote participation on Zoom will also be available. See details on the agenda here.
On June 24, City Manager George Proakis told the City Council that the proposal on July 8 will be a 3.5 percent increase in water rates and a 3.5 percent increase in sewer rates.
“These are lower than our previous estimates, based upon our current status of retained earnings,” Proakis said. “I will note that we’re proposing a same percentage increase across all of the tiers.”
When rates were set in 2024, the projected water and sewer increases were 4.8 percent for each.
Budgets for both water and sewer operate as enterprise funds, which are self-contained and self-funded. The projected revenues for the water fund in Fiscal Year 2026 come in more than $247,000 below the projected expenses of $9.9 million. While the projected sewer expenses of $12.8 million are more than $503,000 above the projected revenues.
The increases also include money being retained by the City for water and sewer. The goal is to have retained earnings of 20 percent of the budget by Fiscal Year 2030.
