Watertown Restaurant to Close After 50+ Years, 2 New Eateries Opening in Town

A fixture on the Watertown eating scene, China Rainbow, will be closing after more than half a century.

A post on Boston Restaurant Talk quoted a note posted by the owner of China Rainbow.

Thank you for your patronage. I am deeply grateful for the memories, laughter and loyal support over the years and will cherish the time we’ve spent together.

Fans still have time to enjoy a meal at China Rainbow, which will be closing on Dec. 21, 2025, according to the note. The restaurant, located at 36 North Beacon St., opened in 1972, and has been serving Chinese food and Polynesian drinks since.

New Restaurants

Boxfish has opened in the original site of Cha Yen, at 613 Mt. Auburn St. (The Thai eatery has moved across the street to a larger space).

The new eatery serves up a variety of seafood options, including a fisherman’s platter, lobster rolls, crab nachos, and seafood risotto.

A new Mediterranean restaurant is in the works for the former Edemame Steakhouse space at 171 Watertown St. According a post on What Now Boston, Sembol Mediterranean Restaurant will feature such options as freshly made breads, house-made mezze, kebabs, and döner.   1. first time here as new-ish watertowners- can’t believe we missed 50+ years of this magical place. food, friends, faith, fun, family, and crab rangoon and also scallion pancakes of course. we hope they have a closing yard sale because the decor is darling. best of luck to everyone ever in general, love you guys and I believe that people are fundamentally good.
