Basketball is back for Watertown High School (well, at Watertown Middle School for one more year). The season tips off for the boys and girls varsity teams on Friday when each face rival Belmont, as both look to return to the MIAA State Tournament.

Boys Basketball

In 2024-25, the Raiders boys squad went 15-7, and defeated Oakmont in the first round of the State Tournament. Abington ended Watertown’s season in the Round of 16. Watertown looks for its third straight winning season, after a rare under .500 year in 2022-23.

The team is led by Hall of Fame coach Steve Harrington in his 32nd season at WHS. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in November.

The Raiders hit the road for their first contest on Friday Dec. 12 at Belmont. The game tips at 7:15 p.m.

The Raiders’ first home game will be Tuesday, Dec. 16 against Woburn at 7 p.m. in the Watertown Middle School Gym. Watertown also hosts Wilmington on Dec. 19, and then a non-league game on Dec. 30 against Fenway before the New Year.

They return home on Jan. 13 to play Winchester, followed by Burlington (Jan. 23), and Lexington (Jan. 27).

A non-league matchup against Community Academy of Science & Health opens February on the 2nd, and the next day Watertown hosts Stoneham. Wakefield visits on Feb. 6, and the final home game is on Feb. 10 against Melrose.

Girls Basketball

Watertowns girls basketball team also seeks to return to the State Tournament this season, and continue its run of winning seasons which stretches back to 2021-22 (the year before WHS went 2-2 in the COVID shortened season). Watertown Head Coach Michael Tempesta enters his third season at the helm.

Last year the Raiders went 14-9 and won their first round game against Oakmont before losing to second-seeded Foxboro. The teams will reunite at the end of the regular season in the Warrior Classic, when Watertown faces the hosts in the first round.

Before that, Watertown will have to navigate the Middlesex League slate, which begins on Friday Dec. 12 against Belmont. The game tips at 7 p.m. in the Watertown Middle School Gym. The second and final home game in December is on the 19th against Wilmington.

The first home game of the New Year is on Jan. 6 against Reading. After three straight road games, Watertown hosts Arlington on Jan. 20 and Burlington on Jan. 23. Milford visits for a non-league game on Jan. 29.

February’s home schedule opens with Stoneham on the 3rd, followed by Wakefield on Feb. 6. The final home game will be against Melrose on Feb. 10.
