Watertown’s wrestlers continued their successful season going 2-0 last week, with wins over Belmont and Lexington, and competed in a tournament.
The Raiders defeated Belmont 45-29 and Lexington 45-30, said Watertown Wrestling Coach Kevin Russo.
“They are both solid teams, so the performance by our team was great to see,” Russo said. “The leadership on the team is starting to really shine. Our captains, Jimmy Shrestha and Hagop Shahbazyan led the way and the other seniors and the juniors have really helped a lot as well.”
Watertown also finished sixth at the Brendan Grant Tournament at Belmont, a competition with 23 teams.
“We are halfway through the season and we had our full line-up together for the first time Friday,” Russo said. “We have been dealing with sickness and injuries for most of the season and it is nice to have the full squad in place finally. I am particularly pleased with the results because our non-league schedule is extremely competitive.”
Russo’s squad faces a challenging schedule this season, with the Raiders adding several top tier teams from all three divisions in the state.
“I felt this team could handle it and we really need to turn the corner by wrestling up,” Russo said. “I always have maintained that if you want to be the best, you need to beat the best. The team has really stepped up to meet the challenge.”
