Watertown High School’s wrestling team wraps up a challenging 2025-26 regular season this week as the team prepares for the MIAA state competitions.
Watertown Wrestling Coach Kevin Russo added some stiff competition for the Raiders this season.
“This year we really beefed up our schedule. We added some of the best teams in the state,” Russo said. “For example, Gloucester, Foxboro, and Dedham are considered to be the top teams in Div. 3 and we competed against them all on the same day. One of them (or Tewksbury) will be picked to win the state tournament.”
Watertown fell to Gloucester 40-39, Dedham 44-33, and Foxboro 47-29.
“We then faced Melrose and lost (they won the Middlesex League championship),” Russo said. “However, since then we have won nine in a row, beating some really good teams. We beat Newton North (42-34) for the first time in 10 years.”
Russo pointed to some other notable victories: Chicopee 42-34, Concord-Carlisle 50-28, Burlington 42-31, and Latin Academy 52-26
“We are currently 20-10 and have one meet left against Weston on Wednesday,” Russo said. “If we win, we will be the third team in Watertown history with 21 wins or more.”
The wrestlers have risen to the competition, Russo said.
“We have had just about everyone step up the past few weeks and we are winning due to their discipline on and off the mat,” Russo said. “Staying healthy, remaining focused, and peaking at the right time has made the difference.”
The Raiders head right into the postseason following their final dual meet. MIAA Div. 3 North Sectionals are Saturday, Feb. 14 at Dracut High School. Those who qualify will move on to the Div. 3 States on Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21 at Gloucester High School.
