A pair of Watertown wrestlers faced the Bay State’s best in the All-State Meet in Springfield on Sunday, and one picked up a milestone win.
Senior Jimmy Strestha won his first consolation match in the 132 pound division with a technical fall to join a select few in the Raiders’ wrestling program, said Watertown Wrestling Coach Kevin Russo.
“Jimmy got his 100th win there, becoming only the 4th wrestler in program history to do so,” Russo said.
Another senior, Fahad Khan, also claimed a win at the MassMutual Center in the 106 pound bracket.
“They each won a match and were one match away from making it to New England’s (top 8),” Russo said. “This was the first time we had two mixed gender team members win a match (or even qualify) for All-States in the same year.”

Last year, the Raiders had one wrestler make the All States in the mixed gender competition — Brady Gleason — and one make it in the girls tournament — Tessa Master, with Master taking third place.
The All-State Meet closed out a successful wrestling season, Russo said.
“They both had a great season and career,” Russo said. “Jimmy had only two wins his freshman year, so getting to 100 took a lot of work. He had over 40 wins this year alone. I couldn’t be prouder of these fine young men.”
Girls Basketball
The 17th seeded Raiders fell behind in the firs half in the MIAA Div. 3 Round of 32 game against 16th seeded Lynnfield, but made a run in the third quarter to close the gap to five points, and cut it to four at the start of the final period. The 16th seeded Pioneers held off Watertown to win the game 54-46 on Friday night.
Coach Mike Tempesta’s team finished the season with a 12-9 record.
Boys Hockey
The Watertown/Wayland boys hockey team got their state tourney off to a great start when sophomore Logan Desrosiers scored 3:30 into the first period. The goal was the only tally by the Raiders in Thursday’s MIAA Div. 3 Round of 32 game against Shawsheen Valley Tech.
The game finished 7-1 in favor of the fifth-seeded Shawsheen. Watertown/Wayland, the 28th seed, finished the campaign with a 3-18 record.
