A vehicle struck a utility pole on Main Street, snapping it in half and cutting off power for several hundred customers on Monday around noon.
The utility pole sits at the corner of Main Street and Pilgrim Road. The top half of the pole fell on top of nearby wires.
“It’s an ongoing issue,” said Watertown Police Lt. Kevin McManus. “We had to divert traffic. The neighborhood affected by power outage.”
Eversource sent out message that said customers were impacted by the power outage and electricity is expected to be restored by 9:15 p.m. Power had been restored to more than half of the 676 customers, as of 3:50 p.m., but 211 remain without power. The original estimate for the completion of repairs was 3:15 p.m. but at about 3:20 p.m. an update pushed back the time estimate.
Watertown Police closed down Main Street in the area of the accident.
An MBTA 70 bus was seen stopped on Main Street at about 1:30 p.m. The MBTA announced that the bus will skip stops inbound (eastbound) at Main opposite Warren Street, Main Street opposite Longfellow Road, Main Street opposite Hersom Street, and at Pilgrim Road. The closest stops with service are at Rangeley Road and Howard St.
Outbound stops being skipped by the 70 are Gilbert Street, Copeland Street, Emerson Road, Longfellow Road, and Warren Street. The closest stops with service are at Edenfield Avenue and Brigham Road.
No details of the accident were available.
