Police Log: Bones Unearthed at Historic Cemetery, Thieves Take 1 Car & Attempt to Take Another

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department.

March 14: A Parker Street resident looking for insurance was scammed. Using the website Insurify, the resident got a number to call Geico. The resident spoke to someone and sent a payment for $560. Later the resident realized it was a fake number.

March 15: The IRS sent a letter saying that a resident had worked for Uber, but the resident never had. Someone filed a 1099 form in the resident’s name.

March 15: A woman went into Target and took $182 in groceries.

March 16: A Robbins Road resident put a check into a mailbox in Belmont, and later discovered the check had been intercepted and the amount increased.

March 17: Someone left trash bags in front of a home on Boyd Street.

March 17: Target reported a juvenile male took $107 worth of Nerf guns and candy.

March 18: A Lexington resident received a text message from an unfamiliar number that stated that if someone didn’t send money they would come to their house and kill them. The resident sent five $100 Apple gift cards via text message.

March 18: A male shoplifter took a Lego set from Target valued at $65.

March 19: A resident ordered a cellphone from T-Mobile and was having issues with delivery. The resident asked the Samsung Galaxy 26+ to the UPS Store on Main Street. When she went to pick it up the phone was not there. It cost $900. Police are investigating.

March 19: A man took a cellphone case valued at $55 from Best Buy.

March 20: A Westminster Avenue resident reported receiving an alert from Chase Bank asking if the resident had spent $849 at American Airlines. The resident also received 800 spam emails. The resident had not made the purchase, and notified the bank.

March 20: A man took a $50 cellphone case from Best Buy and was last seen leaving the area on a blue ebike.

March 20: A man realized he left his iPhone and wallet in the dressing room at Marshalls two hours prior. He went back to the store but they were missing. The phone was valued at $2,000.

March 22: An officer ran the plate of a vehicle leaving the 7-Eleven parking lot, and discovered the registration had been revoked. Officer Andrew DiDuca pulled over the driver and confirmed the registered owner was behind the wheel. The driver was upset and she began yelling when DiDuca said that the car would have to be towed because it was unregistered. Sgt. Mark Leitner arrived to assist and the woman began yelling at both officers, and said their whole family would burn in hell. Officers tried to deescalate the situation and said the driver had to get out of the car, but she refused. Police were able to open the door, and when the driver got out she dropped to the ground and put her arms under her torso to avoid being taken into custody. Police arrested Shamirah Mutaawe, 23, of Waltham, on charges of driving an unregistered motor vehicle, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, and disorderly conduct.

March 22: Two bikes were stolen from Howard Street. They had been locked up between March 12th and 19th. The Cannondale mountain bike and Nishiki mountain bike were valued at $840 combined.

March 22: A woman took clothing, groceries, and toys from Target valued at $570.

March 23: A man took two Lego sets from Target valued at a combined $348.

March 24: Target reported a man took $145 worth of merchandise.

March 24: A Velotric ebike was taken from Howard Street. The bike was valued at $1,800.

March 24: Best Buy reported a man took $1,550 worth of baseball cards.

March 25: A package containing a $43 acrylic frame was taken from Bigelow Avenue.

March 25: Watertown Police received an alert from the City’s 311 system that bones had been located at the Cottage Street Cemetery outside of a grave plot. The last known burial in that plot was in 1906. Police went to investigate and it appeared that the bones had been unearthed by an animal, likely a coyote, when digging a hole. Medical examiners came out and took possession of the bones.

March 25: A check was left in a mailbox in Coolidge Square, and was then stolen, washed, and the amount on the check was changed.

March 26: A shoplifter took 100 packs of Topps baseball cards worth a total of $1,250.

March 27: A man went into CVS on Mt. Auburn Street and took $57 worth of body wash.

March 28: Two women took $355 worth of beauty products from Target.

March 29: Three men arrived at 100 Warren Street, the Watertown Housing Authority’s Joyce Munger Apartments, and two got out. One entered a Chevy Equinox and stole it. The second attempted to enter a car but could not gain access but damaged the door handle. Police are investigating.
