Exhibit Features Work of Armenian Artist from Watertown

The Thompson Gallery at CSW announced “Talin Megherian—Kiss the Ground,” the second exhibition in a five-part exhibition series that examines and celebrates contemporary Armenian art, organized to overlap the centennial memorialization of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. The series explores Armenian culture from different vantage points; yet intersect on themes of memory, loss and celebration. The second exhibition in the series focuses on the abstract-narrative paintings of Talin Megherian (Watertown, MA) and her interest in the stories and traditions of the Armenian people, compromised by the atrocities of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. Megherian’s work explores collective Armenian memory, the memories of her family and Armenian women in particular, through eclectic and colorful abstractions that are lavishly bejeweled by images of Armenian artifacts, historical events, and literary references. “There are tragic stories from both sides of my family,” said Megherian.

Arsenal Center Exhibition Features Young Artists

A new exhibition at the Arsenal Center for the Arts features young artists in a wide variety of mediums.

The show, “30 Under 30” opens this week with 20 new artists and two new categories: digital media and illustration. Art ranges from stark oil paintings (Mark Morin) to short dance videos (Shaun Clarke), quilts examining the grief of lost intimacy (Esther White), children’s quirky book illustrations (Diana Lisanto) and raku-fired “Fragments” of what look like charred remains of a campfire from Paul Hackett’s Land Lasts Longer than People series, according to the Arsenal Center. “Designed to display the work of 30 young artists in Greater Boston and encourage a silent dialogue between them, this exhibit shows the interesting directions young local artists are exploring. The project attracts college seniors, recent graduates and those on the cusp of notoriety with national shows,” the announcement said. The artists in the show are: Andrea Barone, Jeff Bartell, Emily Boucher, Shaun Clarke, Kate Drewniak, Jamaal Eversley, Chloe Feldman Emison, Rose Fristrom, Adric Giles, Suzi Grossman, Julian Guzman, Robin Hackett, Paul Hackett, Elizabeth Hatke, Vanessa Irzyk, Matt Jatkola, Alla Lazebnik, Owen Linders, Diana Lisanto, Haley MacKeil, Sarah May, Marc Morin, Grace Nicklin, Bryan Ramey, Alex Sewell, Cory Shea, Ian Tartasky, Chandra Taylor, Maiya Thorton-Hodge, Esther White.

See What’s Coming to the Watertown Library in January

The Watertown Free Public Library always has plenty going on besides its collection of books, DVDs and music. This month there are author events, the makerspace opening and more.

Here are some of the highlights of events at the library in January:
One Book, One Watertown: Time to Read! As we approach the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the staff of the Watertown Free Public invites the entire community to join us in reading Chris Bohjalian’s novel, The Sandcastle Girls. This cross-generational saga spans the 20th century and the miles from Aleppo and Der-el-Zor, Syria in 1915 to Boston and New York (and Watertown!) in the present day. Though a fictionalized account, we believe this New York Times Bestseller will serve as an ideal catalyst for conversation and remembrance.
