WHS Athletic Hall of Fame Announces Inductees for 2015!

The Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame’s class of 2015 includes a pair of teams and half a dozen athletes – including four sisters! Inductees for this year’s celebration to be held at the Hellenic Cultural Center on Saturday Oct. 17, include six athletes and two teams.

For the first time in its distinguished history, the HOF will induct four talented sisters from the same family, including Bethany Rogers, ’95, Jane Rogers, ’98, Catherine Rogers, ’00, and Mary Rogers, ’03. As players and coaches, the fantastic foursome in field hockey contributed multiple All-Scholastic and MVP awards, 25 Middlesex League titles, 21 Div. II North Section titles, and 12 State Championships.

The Raiders saw plenty of action in state tournaments as well as the state track meet.

The Raiders won a thriller at Victory Field Thursday evening as Watertown won the Central/East Section Div. 3 quarter final 11-10 over Groton-Dunstable. Chris Sidler score the winning goal with just five seconds left, according to the Boston Herald. The fourth seeded Raiders (13-3) move on to the section semifinal on Monday, June 8 against the winner of Dover-Sherborn and Littleton. Girls Tennis
Watertown’s girls tennis team enjoyed one of its must successful seasons in many years, and made the North Section Div.

DallaCosta Sets State Track Meet Record, Leads Watertown to Fifth Place

Senior Brian DallaCosta showed he is the best all-around track athlete – winning the pentathlon at the MIAA East Div. 4 meet and setting a meet record. His win helped the Raiders finish fifth in the boys’ side of the meet at Norwell High School. In the pentathlon, DallaCosta won the 11o hurdles (16.51 seconds), got second in the long jump (5.91 meters), won the high jump (1.73 meters) and the shot put (11.86 meters) and finished third in the 1500 (5:11.10). His total of 2907 points broke the meet record of 2609, which DallaCosta set in 2014.

Watertown Ice Rink May be Seeking Major Tenant if Bentley Leaves

Watertown’s ice arena may be losing a key tenant if Bentley University builds an 0n-campus rink for its ice hockey team. The Bentley hockey team plays its home games and practices at the John A. Ryan Arena, on Paramount Place, just off Pleasant Street. The arena would not have trouble finding groups wanting to replace games Bentley plays in the evening and one weekends, Ryan Arena Director Daniel Brothers told the Town Council during his budget hearing. The challenge will be getting groups during the team’s practice time. “Two-thirds of what Bentley uses is not prime time.

WHS Sports: Girls Lacrosse Gets First Tourney Win, Baseball Makes States

The Raiders girls lacrosse team made history Monday evening by getting its first ever MIAA tournament win. Watertown doubled up visiting Bishop Stang 12-6 in the first round game at Victory Field. The Raiders were lead by the scoring of Aurora Fidler who had five goals. Jenna McMahon got a hat trick with three goals in the game. Watertown moves on and now will visit Dover-Sherborn on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the East Section Div.

WHS Sports: Lacrosse Teams Make Tournament, Track Record Broken

Two Watertown lacrosse teams will be hosting state tournament teams this week. 

The Raiders girls’ lacrosse squad earned the seventh seed in the East Section Div. 2 tournament with their record of 13-3-1. Watertown will host 10th seed Bishop Stang in a first round game on Monday, June 1 at 5 p.m. at Victory Field. The winner plays second seeded Dover-Sherborn. The boys’ lacrosse team (12-3) got the fourth seed and got a first round bye.
