Win by Watertown Girl’s Basketball Sets Up Big Day in Lowell

With the Watertown girl’s basketball team’s 51-39 victory over Hamilton-Wenham on Thursday night in Chelmsford, the Raiders set up a big day for Watertown hoops fans on Saturday. Both the boy’s and girl’s teams will play for North Section championships at the Tsongas Center in Lowell on March 8. The girl’s team, now 21-1, is the top seed in the North Section Div. 2 bracket. The Raiders face third-seeded Arlington Catholic (19-4) at 2 p.m. in Lowell.

One Watertown Team Moves On, One Season Over

The Watertown boy’s basketball team won in the state tournament on Wednesday, while the girl’s hockey team fell. The Raiders basketball team beat Bedford 68-50 in the North Section semifinal at Woburn High School. Watertown now heads to Lowell’s Tsongas Center for the Div. 3 section final on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. against Stoneham. The girl’s hockey team’s run ended with a 1-0 loss to Duxbury in the Div.

Successful Weekend for Watertown High School Teams

The boy’s basketball team rolled over Saugus, and almost doubled their opponents score in the 79-45 win at Watertown High School. The second seeded Raiders next face Bedford in the Div. 3 North Section semifinals. The game will be played Wednesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Woburn.

Watertown Ice Hockey Teams Skate into State Tournament

Watertown High School’s boys’ and girls’ hockey teams both earned high seeds in the MIAA state tournament, and one will skate at home. The Raiders boys’ team took the top seed in the North Section Div. 3 tournament. Watertown, which finished with a record of 13-2-5, will play a quarterfinal game against the winner of the Bedford-Shawsheen matchup. The game will be on Sunday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Chelmsford.

Lawyers Group Holds Meeting Looking at Watertown Lockdown Last April

The Massachusetts Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild will hold the fourth in a series of meetings looking at the lockdown in Watertown during the hunt for the Boston Marathon Bombing suspects last April. On March 5 at 7 p.m., the group will hold a meeting to provide a safe space for people to address concerns over how the lockdown was conducted, according to the announcement from the group. Some issues brought up include whether the lockdown was necessary, the effect on people who were searched and whether the U.S. Constitution was followed. It will also look at how the lockdown impacted the Fourth Amendment – The Right To Be Secure In One’s Home And Person From Unreasonable Searches and Seizures. The meeting will be at the First Parish Church of Watertown, 35 Church St., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Parking is available at lots on Summer Street and in the Watertown Square municipal lot.

Watertown Grabs High Seeds in Basketball Tourney

The Watertown girl’s and boy’s basketball teams earned high seeds in the MIAA North Section basketball tournament. The Raiders earned top seed in the Div. 2 girl’s pairings announced on Friday. Watertown (19-1) hosts a quarterfinal game against the winner of the Marblehead-Newburyport game on March 1 at 7 p.m. according to the MIAA tourney site. This is a step up in divisions for Watertown from previous years.

Woman Running the Boston Marathon to Raise Money for the Watertown Police Foundation

Dawn Castillo Harper made it within a mile of finish her first marathon when the race came to a halt when bombs went off near the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon. The Back Back resident will be back in 2014, this time she is raising money for the Watertown Police Foundation. “When we thought about what the Watertown Police did on April 19th last year, we realized that they are part of the reason there will be a safer Boston Marathon in 2014,” Harper said, whose fundraising being helped by her running partner in 2013 Haley Dowling. “This is our way of saying thank you to all the police in Watertown.”

The first in a series of fund raisers will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Donohue’s Bar and Grill, 87 Bigelow Ave.
