Watertown’s Callahan Named Framingham State’s Head Baseball Coach

Framingham State named Watertown native and FSU alum Sean Callahan its new head baseball coach. 

Callahan moves to Framingham after three years working as an assistant coach, most recently at Stonehill College. He also worked as the hitting and catching coach at UMass-Boston. “We are thrilled to welcome Sean back to Framingham State to lead the baseball program,” said Framingham State Athletic Director Tom Kelley in the announcement. “Sean brings a wealth of baseball knowledge and as a former Ram, he is familiar with the University, the baseball program, and the league. We are looking forward to Sean guiding the program into a new era.”

Watertown Youth Softball Piling Up Wins, Several Players Named All-Stars

The Watertown Youth Softball teams have had quite a summer, with the 12 and under team in first place after only losing once this year. 

The 12U Raiders’ record is 11-1, recently suffering their first loss to Lincoln-Sudbury. Previously the team beat North Reading and the previously undefeated Medford team. With all the success, several members of the Raiders made the All-Star team. From the 12U Raider Red team: Zoe Ozawa and Hannah Childress

From the 12U Raider Black team: Isabella Sadkowski, Victoria Reilly, Brianna Cooper and Soline Fisher

Also, two members of the 18U Raiders team were named All-Stars: Jacquie Furbish and Stella Papadopoulos

This year’s All-Star games were be played at the Burnham Road Complex in Methuen on Saturday, Aug. 4.

Watertown’s Lauren Kelly Signs to Play for Boston’s Pro Women’s Hockey Team

Watertown native and Northeastern graduate Lauren Kelly is going pro. The defender signed to play for the Boston Pride of the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL). Kelly completed a successful career at Northeastern this spring, scoring 25 goals and adding 39 assists in 140 career games. In the 2017-18 season, she led all defenders in NCAA Div. I women’s hockey with eight power play goals.

Watertown’s Field Hockey Success Continues at Bay State Games

Watertown field hockey players continued their success over the summer at the Bay State Games, held over the weekend. 

The Raiders had players on the Gold Medal winning Metro/Northeast field hockey team, and Watertown won the High School Division 6v6 tournament at the Bay State Games. Watertown’s Catherine Connors, Ally Kennedy, Aurise Tattrie, and Ashley Shaughnessy played for the Metro/Northeast team. Over the three days of the tournament, Kennedy scored five goals and had two assists (including one in the 3-2 win over Coastal in the Gold Medal game), Connors had a goal and Tattrie had an assist. The members of the Watertown’s Bay State Games 6v6 Gold Medal winning team were: Connors, Tattrie, Kennedy, Gabby Venezia, Olivia Lampasona, Emily Campbell, Shannon Hughes and Elaine Andrade.

World Cup Final Watch Party Being Hosted by Watertown Church

Join other soccer fans in the excitement of the World Cup final on Sunday at Watertown’s Greek Church. The Taxiarchae/Archangels Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Ave., Watertown, will host a World Cup Watch Party on Sunday, July 15, 2018 at 11 a.m.

The game between France and Croatia will be shown on a large high-definition television and the Zo food truck will serve Greek cuisine. All ages are welcome.

Retiring Watertown High Athletic Director Helped Build a Successful Program

After 11 years, Michael Lahiff will be stepping down as Athletic Director at Watertown High School at the end of June. During that time, he helped bring WHS back into a championship winning program, with athletes who are both competitive and show good sportsmanship, and with many teams lead by teacher-coaches. Lahiff retires after 39 years in education in Stoneham, Somerville and Watertown. He spent the last 24 years as athletic director, first in Stoneham and then at WHS. “I was on the other end of the world for most of the rest of my career, Somerville and Stoneham twice,” Lahiff said.

Watertown Basketball Coach Hosting Basketball Camp in July

Watertown High School girl’s basketball coach Pat Ferdinand will host Mass. Hoop Academy, a basketball camp for boys and girls in grades 4 to 12. The camp will be held July 2, 3, 5 and 6, 2018 at Watertown High School. The camp staff will be Ferdinand as director, New Mission High School girls varsity coach Mitchell Hercule as high school division camp director, and counselors Nicole Lanzo (WHS alum), Katelyn Rourke (WHS alum) and Maggie Mulligan (UMass Amherst alum). Watertown-Belmont Youth Football and Cheerleading is now accepting registrations for the fall 2018 season with a deadline of July 15th. Practices begin on Monday, August 6th, 2018 at Moxley Field in Watertown. Our program offers two different divisions: flag football for first and second graders, tackle football for third through eighth grade and cheerleading for all grades.
