Smith’s Hat Trick of TDs Lead Watertown to Win in First Round of Playoffs

After a slow start, the Watertown High School football team got in sync and rolled over Austin Prep in the first round of the MIAA Div. 3 North Playoffs, Friday night. 

The top-seeded Raiders were lead by senior quarterback Deon Smith, who found the end zone at Victory Field three times in the 34-18 win. The visitors held a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, following a Jake Thain touchdown run and two Watertown fumbles. That lead ended on the first play of the second quarter when Smith ran it in from 27 yards out for the 7-6 Raiders lead. His second touchdown came on a 36-yard run later in the quarter, and a weaving 55-yard run by senior running back Zach Rimsa gave the Raiders a 20-6 halftime lead.

Raiders Roll Over Wilmington in Friday Night Football Game

The Watertown football team’s successful season continued Friday night when the Raiders traveled to Wilmington and shut out the hosts. Watertown scored 21 points in the second quarter to surge past Wilmington. Running back Zach Rimsa scored the first on a one-yard run. Then quarterback Deon Smith took it in himself from four yards away. Running back Vasken Kebabjian then exploded for a 49-yard touchdown run.

Late Touchdown Propels Raiders to a Win at Burlington Friday Night

A stellar second quarter and a late touchdown pushed the Watertown football team past host Burlington for the 31-28 win on Friday night. The Raiders trailed 6-3 after one quarter, but then got touchdowns from three different players to enter halftime with a 24-14 lead. First, running back Zack Rimsa scored on a three yard run. Then it was quarterback Deon Smith’s turn. He scored on an 8 yard run.

Town Balks at Request for Temporary Lights for Watetown Youth Soccer

Town officials denied the request from Watertown Youth Soccer for temporary lights to be placed at a park in town this fall. The soccer program has been growing rapidly, and now has more than 600 children participating. WYS do not have not have enough room on fields during daylight hours to accommodate all the teams.

A proposal to put temporary lights at Arsenal Park was brought to the Town Council from the Human Services committee in September. The Council decided the idea needed more work, and there were questions remaining, such as who would pay for the rental, fueling and operation of the lights. Last week, official met and decided the lights would not be a good idea, said Assistant Town Manager Steve Magoon.

Watertown Football Team Hangs On to Defeat Melrose

Two first half Watertown touchdowns established a first half lead at Victory Field, and the Raiders held on for the 14-12 win over Melrose, Friday night. Watertown bounced back after an overtime loss last week to win the Middlesex League clash. Senior quarterback Deon Smith ran for a 22-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Melrose scored a touchdown in the second quarter but missed the extra point. Then Raiders’ senior running back Vasken Kebabjian ran in from five yards out to make it 14-6.
