Gold Kings Victorious in First Ever Game in New Hockey League

The Boston Gold Kings made a successful debut, defeating the Holyoke Papermen 6-3 on home ice at the John A. Ryan Arena in Watertown. Saturday night’s game was the first ever in the brand new Union Hockey League. The Gold Kings’ first goal was scored by Jarrod Fitzpatrick. The semi-pro team is made up of players with experience in the minor leagues, college, and juniors. The Gold Kings celebrated the first victory on social media saying:

“First win in the books for the Gold Kings in our home opener! @jarrod_fitzpatrick scores the first goal in BGK history.

For some, playing for the Boston Gold Kings is a second chance to keep their hockey career going, for others being on the semi-pro team based out of Watertown is the first time playing with an organized adult team, and it’s fun for all. The first game for the Boston Gold Kings will be at Ryan Arena on Saturday, Jan.

Skate with Watertown’s New Semi-Pro Hockey Team

Watertown will be home to one of the franchises in the new Union Hockey League (UHL), and the Boston Gold Kings invite the public to join them on the ice for a special event on Dec. 27 at 7:10 p.m.

The Gold Kings are one of 16 teams in the Union Hockey League a senior “A” semi-pro hockey league with squads in the Northeast and Midwest. They will play home games at John A. Ryan Arena in Watertown, with the first game on Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. vs. the Holyoke Papermen.

Watertown Boys Hockey Team Starts Season Wednesday, Girls in Co-op Team with Belmont

The Watertown High School boys hockey will seek another run deep into the tournament in the 2023-24 season, and the Raiders’ first game will be Wednesday, Dec. 13. Meanwhile, Watertown has joined forces on the ice with Belmont to put together a co-op girls hockey team.

Youth Hockey Players Can Enter to Participate in Boston Bruins Foundation Clinic

Watertown Recreation Director Peter Centola announced that young hockey players can enter to be part of a hockey clinic put on by the Boston Bruins Foundation. The following announcement was provided by the Watertown Recreation Department:

On behalf of the City of Watertown, the Watertown Department of Recreation, and the Boston Bruins Foundation, it is my privilege to formally invite you to our Court Dedication Ceremony at PFC Richard Moxley Field. This event will take place on Wednesday, October 25 at 4 p.m. at 31 Westminster Ave in Watertown. As part of this Dedication and Celebration, there will be a hockey clinic offered by the Boston Bruins Foundation. The Watertown Recreation Department are looking for 30 participants who love hockey, ages 8, 9, 10 and 11 and will be able to make a commitment on October 25 from 3:30 to 5:30.

Boston Bruins Foundation Sponsoring New Outdoor Rink/Court at Moxley Field, Jerry York to Speak at Opening

The new multi-sport rink and court at Moxley Field will be sponsored by the biggest name in hockey the Boston area, and one of Watertown’s hockey royalty will be part of the dedication later in October. The Watertown Recreation Department sent out the following announcement:

Residents and Friends of Watertown,

On behalf of the City of Watertown, the Watertown Department of Recreation, and the Boston Bruins Foundation, it is my privilege to formally invite you to our Court Dedication Ceremony at PFC Richard Moxley Field. This event will take place on Wednesday, October 25 at 4 p.m. at 31 Westminster Ave in Watertown. I am honored that we can salute Vietnam War Marine PFC Richard Moxley, for whom the field is named after, while creating a fun filled event to not only dedicate, but officially open our newest recreational facility. This facility includes a multi-purpose rink, basketball court, tennis / pickleball court, and LED lighting.

Former Watertown Hockey Player Named Coach of Prep School

Watertown High School graduate Mike Busconi will take the helm at The Winchendon School as the prep school’s head hockey coach. Busconi played for Watertown High School and served two years as captain. He made the Middlesex League All-Star team in 2012. After WHS, he attended The Winchendon School for a Post-Graduate year. “Super excited about it to be back,” Busconi told the New England Hockey Journal.

Watertown Pro Hockey Player Earns League Award for Perseverance, Sportsmanship

Boston PrideBoston Pride defender Lauren Kelly won the Premier Hockey Federation’s Denna Laing Award. The following announcement was provided by the Premier Hockey Federation:

The Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) has announced that defender Lauren Kelly of the Boston Pride has been selected as the Denna Laing Award recipient for the 2022-23 regular season. The award was determined by Denna and her family and goes to the player who most exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport. “Selecting the winner of this year’s Denna Laing Award was extremely difficult because there were many deserving candidates, each traversing their own adversity with relentlessness and a positive attitude,” said Laing. “This year’s winner, Lauren Kelly, has garnered the respect of her coaches, teammates, opponents, officials, and fans.
