Watertown Field Hockey Starts Hunt for Sixth Straight State Title

The Watertown field hockey team learned who it will play in the State Tournament as they seek a sixth straight crown.

The top seeded Raiders will host the quarterfinal of the MIAA Div. 2 North Section field hockey tournamentagainst the winner of the Wilmington (eighth seed, 9-4-3)-Newburyport (ninth, 9-5-4) game. Watertown will play on Friday, Oct. 31 at 2:30 p.m. at Victory Field.

Second seed in the North is Lynnfield (15-2-1), third is Weston (15-1-2) and fourth is Marblehead (13-4-2).

Watertown has been dominant for years, stacking up 133 straight games without a loss. This year the Raiders are particular dominant, going 18-0 and not giving up a single goal. Watertown has outscored its opponents 93-0 this year, according to a report in the Watertown Tab.

Watertown looks likely to be back in the state final, which will be played at WPI in Worcester on Sunday, Nov. 16, according to the MIAA Field Hockey tournament format document. This would be a week earlier than previous years, and on a Sunday rather than a Saturday.

To reach the final Watertown will have to beat the South Section champ. The top two seeds are teams the Raiders have beat in the semis the past two years: 1 – Apponequet (15-1) and 2 – Dover-Sherborn (15-0-3). Top seed in the Central Section is Hopedale (18-0) and Southwick (13-1-2) is number one in the West.

  1. Someone should be in touch with Mike Lynch at Channel 5 (WCVB) as soon as possible! I’m certain that he would love to feature the team and its superb coach on his daily sports shows at 6 and 11 pm. The RR field hockey team all deserve as much recogntion as possible, and Lynch’s show is just the right venue. I urge someone to call Lynch at Channel 5 and give him the full story.
