LETTER: Resident Feels Council is Moving Too Fast With New RMUD Zoning

The Town Council meeting on Dec. 1 about rezoning the malls should start with singing Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.” Here’s why. The proposal to rezone a large part of the Arsenal St. corridor, including both malls, to a Regional Mixed Use District (RMUD) is big, complex, hard to understand and will have a huge impact on Watertown. It would allow the Planning Board to give permits at the Arsenal Mall (let alone the rest of the new zone) for almost 3 million square feet, with buildings as tall as the Board will allow.

Dear Supporters,

I write to express my sincere appreciation to the volunteers, donors and voters who made it possible for me to win re-election to the Town Council. We came in a very strong second, winning six of the 12 precincts. It was a wonderful showing – thank you. Election campaigns are challenging endeavors that require a committed campaign committee, a dedicated team of volunteers and donors and, of course, a willing group of voters who decided to place their trust in a candidate. Fortunately I had all three!

Old Waterway Discovered Running Under Watertown Square

While doing some sewer work in the area of Watertown Square, the Department of Public Works discovered a forgotten culvert running right through the town’s biggest intersection. About 18-feet under the roadway, the DPW found a culvert – a stone pipe – that was not on any of the town’s plans, said DPW Superintendent Gerald Mee. It is likely a stormwater pipe. The culvert runs north-south, from Charles River Road to Mt. Auburn Street.

Watertown-Based Tech Company Goes Public, Looking to Hire

Watertown-based cybersecurity company Mimecast issued its IPO last week, and the CEO says he wants to hire more employees in town. The companied debuted on the NASDAQ on Nov. 19, and CEO Peter Bauer said he wants to add more people at the company headquarters on Pleasant Street. He told the Boston Business Journal that he anticipates hiring “dozens” of more employees in Watertown. Mimecast specializes in providing “next generation cloud security and risk management services for corporate information and email,” according to the company.

Field Hockey Team Does Not Seek the Limelight, Continues a Tradition

Along with the cheers of joy during the Watertown High School field hockey team’s championship celebration on Saturday, there was also some sighs of relief. After beating Auburn in Worcester, both Head Coach Eileen Donahue and senior co-captain Michaela Antonellis mentioned they were so happy after “all they had gone through this year.” One reporter, who had not followed the Raiders so closely, wondered if some tragedy or off the field difficulty had befallen the team. No, it was just a season in the spotlight – setting a national record for longest unbeaten streak and winning another state title. Donahue said neither she nor her players like to be the focus of media attention.

Distributor Purchases Rights to Movie Featuring Watertown’s Eliza Dushku

One of Watertown’s Eliza Dushku’s most recent projects got a big boost when the distribution rights for the move were purchased. FilmBuff purchased the rights to “Jane Wants a Boyfriend,” a dramedy about a young woman on the autism spectrum and her older sister – played by Dushku – who tries to find her a beau, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film debuted over the summer at film festivals in Connecticut and New York City. Louisa Krause stars as Jane, William Sullivan directed the movie, which was written by Jarret Kerr. (See the trailer below). According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jane Wants a Boyfriend will open in select theaters and all major On Demand platforms, including Amazon Instant Video, Google Play and iTunes, in March 2016.
