Watertown residents favored Bernie Sanders by a small margin in the Democratic primary, and heavily backed Donald Trump on the Republican side in Tuesday’s Massachusetts Presidential Primary.
Sanders won 8 of 12 precincts and came out ahead of Hillary Clinton in Watertown, 4,422 to 4,338 in the unofficial results from Tuesday’s election. Martin O’Malley received 24 votes and Roque de la Fuente got 14 votes.
Trump received 1,223 votes, or 49 percent of the GOP ballots. Marco Rubio narrowly beat John Kasich – 460 to 458 – for the second most votes in town. Ted Cruz received 234 votes for fourth, Ben Carson got 51 votes.
Some of those not actively running also got votes. Jeb Bush got 23 votes, Chris Christie 9, Carly Fiorina and Rand Paul each got 6, and Mike Huckabee and George Pataki got one vote apiece.
The third party with a Presidential Party was the Green-Rainbow Party. Jill Stein got the most votes, with 6, and Sedinam Curry got 2.
In the state committee races, locals dominated. On the Republican side, Watertown’s Steve Aylward got 1,715 votes, or 83.5 percent. His opponent, Neil Edward St. Clair, got 328 votes.
Watertown Democrat Steve Owens got 87.6 percent of the vote, with 6,092 votes, to David Kazis’ 813 votes.
Turnout was high in Watertown, with 49.7 percent of registered voters turning out.
