A large pile of trash was left on Main Street near the Watertown Central Fire Station after a garbage truck caught on fire Saturday morning.
Public Works Superintendent Gerald Mee said his department is working on removing the pile, which appears from a photo to be several feet high and take up about three parking spaces.
The truck was a commercial truck owned by Republic, Mee said.
“Right in front of the library a rubbish truck caught fire and the Fire Department put it out, but they had to dump it on the street to do so,” Mee said.
Republic brought in a contractor to remove the trash, and because there was some residue left afterward the put down some Speedy Dry to soak it up, Mee said. The contractor will come back Sunday to sweep up the Speedy Dry.
A witness who went by after the fire said the truck and driver appeared to be OK.
Geez, what a catastrophe! It’s an unfortunate reality for these types of drivers, though, sometimes. Glad there weren’t any major injuries, though.
