A small gas station store on Arsenal Street has been turned into New England’s first Kangaroo Express location.

The convenience store is part of the Watertown Shell gas station, at the intersection of Arsenal and School streets. Owners Paul and Alberta Zoummar took over the gas station in 2017, and last summer it was rebranded as a Shell station.

They wanted to do something more with the store on the property, and were able to get a franchise with the brand in the Circle K group, Alberta said.

“It is the first Kangaroo Express in New England, so we have the same products as Circle K: coffee, ice coffee, tea, fountain drinks, and grilled hot dogs,” Alberta said.

The store officially became a Kangaroo Express in February, and it will host a grand opening event on April 25 and 26.

“We will be giving away a $100 gift card, and other prizes, including a bike,” Alberta said.

There will also be free samples provided by vendors such as Red Bull and Monster Energy Drink.

  1. Great idea… bad location. It’s only a few blocks away from me, but it can be a real hassle at times getting in and out of there. I’d rather drive the extra mile or so to Coolidge Square to gas up.

There was also a recommendation from the BikePed committee a few years ago to eliminate the right turn on red at that intersection… Great, fantastic idea! Let’s make traffic problems worse along that stretch of Arsenal St.

  2. Congrats! I waited for months for it to finally be a gas station again and am happy they get to now have a little store.

I’ve never had a problem getting in or out. Getting in I’ve had to wait if both forward moving lanes are long while stopped at a red light. The town could put directionals on the road that have cars at lights stop further back so folks could turn in. Getting out depends on a friendly soul.

Even with all that, I still get gas there as it’s one of two with the best prices. Prolly would never use the Circle K part of it anyway.

  3. Thank you for the kind words!
