The Watertown Police Department warns residents to be aware of a scam involving someone posing a representative from a utility.

The Watertown Police posted the following announcement on its Facebook page:

WPD received a complaint regarding a “utility company” impostor scam. As always, make sure to verify the credentials of the individual before giving out any financial or personal information. Your utility bill and the internet are good reference points. Scammers request payment through gift cards and Western Union. Never purchase and provide the gift card numbers to anyone over the phone and/or the internet. This is always a SCAM. Always contact WPD if you suspect fraudulent activity at 617-972-6500
