A Community Forum to discuss the Watertown High School project will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m.

The meeting will be held virtually on Zoom, and will also be broadcast on Watertown Cable. The forum is the ninth one focused on the new WHS, according to the announcement from the School Building Committee.

The most recent plan, which would cost an estimated $198 million, calls for the old school to be torn down and the new one constructed on the same site. The new school will have space for the current academic program, and will also include space for the Career and Technical Education programs in Engineering Technology and Medical Assisting.

A parking garage will be built on the bottom floor, and the school is planned to be zero net energy (so it will produce enough electricity through solar panels and other ways to cover the amount used by the school).

While the school is being constructed, students will attend classes at a temporary high school built on Moxley Field (near Watertown Middle School).

The agenda for Wednesday’s forum includes an update on the design, a review of the final traffic study of the new high school and the temporary school at Moxley field, discussion of the project schedule, and a question and answer period.

School officials plan to present the project for final approval from the Massachusetts School Building Authority board on March 2.

The presentation for the forum will be posted to the Watertown Building for the Future site (click here) prior to the meeting to allow the Community to review it in advance or use it to follow along.

  1. Will the phone numbers to call into this meeting work? They weren’t working for the Council meeting last week on the topic of the Proposed Regulations for Short-Term Rentals in Watertown. Many comments weren’t heard because people couldn’t get through to voice their opposition to the Airbnb (aka Short-Term Rentals) that are currently going on in the City illegally and future ones. If the phones don’t work, then people are not being allowed to be part of the legislative process and other issues.
