To the Watertown Free Public Library Board of Trustees, Library Staff, and Community Members,
After much reflection, I’ve decided not to seek re-election to the Watertown Free Public Library Board of Trustees.
The past four years have been challenging and transformative-both personally and in my role as a trustee. Early in my term, the board faced a difficult leadership transition following the retirement of our long-time director. That process tested my values and commitment, and I believe I brought integrity and thoughtfulness to that moment.
Less than a year later, the new director resigned. Around that same time, my stepdad — who had recently moved to Watertown from out of state with my mom to help support our family — died suddenly of a heart attack in June 2023. Balancing grief, caregiving for two young children, my professional work as a clinical social worker with the geriatric population, and public service was overwhelming. Despite all of this, I chaired the search for a new director, and I’m incredibly proud of the outcome. Kim Long is a thoughtful, equity-driven leader, and her vision for the library gives me full confidence in its future. We are beyond lucky to have her as director.
While I’ve done my best to serve with dedication through ongoing personal demands, I do not believe I can continue in this role in the way the community deserves. It is time for someone new to bring fresh energy to the work. I would be fortunate to serve again in the future, perhaps when I do not have as many family and work commitments.
It has been an honor to serve the Watertown community and Watertown Free Public Library. I remain a committed supporter of Director Long, staff and volunteers, and look forward to seeing all that lies ahead for the library and the board.
With gratitude,
Sara Keary
Your service is appreciated. Libraries are more important now than ever!
Thank you Sara for your commitment to our library and our community! I look forward to what you do next.
Thanks Sara. I am sure you will be missed. I also love the picture of you and those great parents of yours! Take care.
Thank you for such exceptional civic stewardship, Sara, during a tumultuous time, both personally and for the Watertown Free Public Library. I remember meeting your mother and step-father when they first arrived in Watertown, only to meet with tragedy months later. Unbowed, you carried out your fiduciary obligation with dignity and grace, helping to resteady WFPL leadership after unexpected winds swirled through. “Well done is better than well said,” noted Ben Franklin back in 1737. His words well apply to you today. As you step back from public life, we Watertowners still benefit from your service, as no doubt we shall again. Thank you for the last four years, and may God bless you and your family as you step into your future.
Congratulations Sara on a successful 4 year tenure as a Watertown Library Trustee. Your energy and leadership has contributed greatly to the success and stability of the library. Wishing you all the best as you focus on your family and professional duties. Be sure to take some time for yourself!
