Dear Editor,

Last Wednesday, Oct. 8, Theo Offei, was the Guest on the Eye on Watertown Podcast. I was very impressed with his platform that emphasizing and incorporating important issues that involve all constituents of Watertown rather than a few.

As an original member of the Charter Commission that established the current management style; Manager – Council under which we are operating, we set up Districts and At-Large Positions. The Purpose of the Districts were to allow lesser- known Candidates to have a smaller field in order to get known; elected and later vie for an At-Large Position; thus, having new faces.

Theo could have taken this District Road to being a member of the Council. However, during our conversation he emphasized the importance of outreach and meeting as many residents as he possibly could. And, he stated this was not relegated to being a candidate for election, but his plan was to do so on a continual basis while serving on the Council.

Theo stated listening and responding to needs is the only way to effectively serve the community.

Theo, is the first candidate I have heard speaking of preserving the character of Watertown. I know this term is subjective; however, Watertown has a long, storied history in this country to be celebrated. Both he and we know that crowding and overuse of the few spaces available is not consistent with the history and character of the City.

Theo Offei, also spoke about spending taxpayers’ monies in a responsible way; employing sound fiscal management. He emphasized, as the appropriating body, the purse is very important

Having new faces on the Council in deciding the growth and development of the City is especially important at this juncture. Mr. Offei’s statement of “A Pause to see Where we are and to Reflect on what is Best for the Community” is refreshing.

Theo has an interesting and unique background; having been born in Africa, his parents immigrating to Italy while he was young and growing up as an Afro-Italian. I can see a different outlook rooted in a diverse culture.

He came to the United States on a scholarship; went to school in California and fortunately met a  Young Lady from Watertown and decided to resettle here.

They have two children at the Hosmer School; therefore, we know the School District will be properly addressed as one of his interests.

Therefore, I hope you will join me in casting one of your Council votes for Theo Offei.

Clyde L. Younger
Former Town Council President
