LETTER: Resident Endorses Three Running for Watertown School Committee

Print More

Dear Editor,

Now that the School Committee forums are over, I want to formally endorse. First, an endorsement for two familiar faces and then a new one.

Current Member Jessica Middlebrook has a track record of collaborative leadership, focusing on student well-being and equitable access to resources, and actively supporting the expansion of pre-K. These have been informed by her background as a school mental health counselor. Her most recent achievement includes a successful and non-acrimonious labor negotiation. As a chair of key subcommittees, including Budget and Finance, she constantly demonstrates her hands-on involvement in the district’s operational details.

Former Member, David Stokes, a Sr. Program Manager in IS Security, has a passion for public education, especially to this district. He has managed facilities and led on vocational education needs. As chair of the Buildings & Grounds Subcommittee, he oversaw the new and renovated buildings, and successfully managed and prepared for their warranty periods. He actively worked on opportunities for students on the non-traditional academic paths, focusing on feasibility and in house solutions. His institutional knowledge and fiscal experience give him a comprehensive understanding of the district’s financial and policy landscape.

Candidate Sheila Krishnan is a parent of two elementary school students and an active community volunteer. Work experience in public health has given  her an in-depth understanding of the complex needs of schools. As Director of Career and Professional Development at Harvard’s Chan School of Public Health, she has invaluable insight into the challenges students face post secondary, including college affordability, mental health and career skill needs — career exploration, job search strategy, networking, interview preparation and salary negotiation. This experience also includes helping colleges implement federal grants to improve education, training, and access for college students. This career guidance would be invaluable to all students at Watertown Public Schools, and her work in mental health and suicide prevention among college students gives her a strong foundation for addressing these issues within the district.

Sheila’s collaborative nature and her commitment to bringing people together to solve problems are particularly compelling.

  • Known for listening to diverse perspectives, she builds bridges, and takes stands that will advance the well-being of all residents
  • A keen observer, she is not afraid to ask the tough questions that move the work forward, particularly when it is for a better process and outcome for everyone
  • With a proven track record of advocating, coaching and participating, she lives education’s role in an effective democracy

I have no doubt she will make an ideal member on the Watertown School Committee. Like Jessica and David, Sheila brings the necessary blend of passion, professional experience, and collaborative leadership to the table.

Thanks,
Rita Colafella
Watertown Resident
