The following announcement was provided by the City of Watertown:
The City of Watertown is excited to announce the launch of a new temporary public art installation in partnership with the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt). “The Light Between” is created by students from the Investigations in Light class, led by Professor Elaine Buckholtz. The site-specific work will be on view at Sullivan Park, located at the corner of Arlington Street and Mount Auburn Street in Watertown, MA, from November 3 to November 17, 2025, with an interactive experience that includes puppets, scenic elements, and optical devices in a dynamic interplay of shadow and light on Monday, November 3, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Music and seating provided.
“The Light Between” uses innovative lighting and material techniques to transform the familiar landscape of Sullivan Park into a dynamic, contemplative experience. This project serves as a practical, real-world application of the students’ semester-long study of light as a medium for artistic expression and public engagement.
This installation is more than a standalone exhibit; it acts as a teaser and precursor for a much larger initiative: “Open for Business,” a series of substantial public art installations planned for Coolidge Square in the Spring of 2026. The “Open for Business” project is specifically designed to invigorate the commercial district of Coolidge Square, offering visual interest and creative energy during the ongoing, essential Mount Auburn Street reconstruction. By drawing attention to the area with vibrant public art, the initiative aims to remind residents and visitors that local businesses remain accessible and vital throughout the construction period.
‘The Light Between’ is an exciting preview of how light and design can be used to re-imagine our public spaces. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the opening event at Sullivan Park to meet the artists and experience the installation at its most dynamic.
