Louise Nugent

Louise M. (Roche) Nugent, of Watertown, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on December 21, just three days shy of her 95th birthday.

Louise was born and raised in Watertown and Newton, Massachusetts. She was drawn to the arts from an early age and after her graduation from Newton High School went on to study and graduate from the Massachusetts College of Art. Louise then began her professional career as a draftswoman, where she was known for her patience, kindness, and strong work ethic. Louise also proudly served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, better known as the WAVES.

Louise was predeceased by her parents, Helen Cassidy and Thomas Roche; her husband, Alfred Nugent; her brothers, Thomas Roche (and his wife Ruth) and Maurice Roche; and her sisters, Helen Powers (and her husband Richard) and Genevieve Menton (and her husband Thomas); and her brother-in-law Bruce Kreuger.

Louise is survived by her children: Anthony Nugent; Christine (“Sally”) Kadison and her husband David; Paul Nugent and his wife Clare Gamberoni; Matthew Nugent and his wife Nancy; Kevin Nugent and his wife Lori; and Helen (“Elle”) Nugent and her husband Matthew Smith; her sister, Diane Kreuger; and many cherished nieces, nephews and friends.

Louise — affectionately known as “Grammy” or “Mimi” — was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. Grammy/Mimi leaves behind her many beloved grandchildren: Sarah Kadison; William Kadison (and his wife Nako Kobayashi); Dylan Kadison; Aidan Nugent; Gabriella Nugent; Colleen Nugent McLean (and her husband Michael McLean); Brian Nugent (and his partner Monica McKeown); Shea Nugent (and his partner Kerin Miller); Owen Nugent; Maeve Nugent; Roan Smith; and Genevieve Smith.

After raising her children, Louise returned to work as an art teacher at St. Patrick’s High School in Watertown and later as a draftswoman for Bryant & Associates in Boston. In retirement, she enjoyed time with friends and participated in many activities at the Watertown Senior Center and the Watertown Art Association, where she proudly served as a Board Member, Vice President, and President.

Louise will be remembered for her deep love of family and friends, her creativity, and the many experiences she shared with those she loved — traveling, summers at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, painting, playing board games and cards, talking over a cup of tea, and always being present for the milestone moments in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Our beloved mother will be deeply missed by all.

Friends and family are invited to share memories at her wake at MacDonald-Rockwell Funeral Home, 270 Main Street, Watertown, Massachusetts, on Friday, December 26, from 4–7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Watertown on Saturday, December 27, at 10 a.m., followed by burial at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Louise’s name to the Mosesian Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472, https://www.mosesianarts.org.
