Several Watertown High School wrestlers extended their season by finishing well in Saturday’s MIAA Div. 3 North Sectional Meet in Dracut. One repeated as section champ.
The Raiders finished seventh overall, despite missing three starters, said WHS Wrestling Coach Kevin Russo.
Senior Fahad Khan won the 106 pound division, going 4-0 in the meet and made some history.
“Fahad became the first wrestler in Watertown history to be a two time sectional champion,” Russo said. “He is only a second year wrestler which makes it an even more impressive accomplishment. He beat the same wrestler that he beat in the finals last year. However, last year he won 2-1 and this year he won 10-5. Excellent achievement for him.”
Senior Jimmy Shrestha got to the final of the 132 pounds bracket before losing.
“Jimmy lost to a superb wrestler in the finals from Tewksbury. However, Jimmy was dialed in all day and he won his matches going into the finals with authority,” Russo said. “Jimmy has been an excellent leader all season and he is eager for the state tournament to begin. Jimmy works extremely hard and never stops trying to improve.”

Three other Raiders will prepare to compete at the Div. 3 State Meet on Friday and Saturday at Gloucester High School.
Ruben Kostanyan is an alternate for the States after finishing fifth in the 138 pound competition.
“We sometimes forget that he is a freshman because he works so hard and continues to improve,” Russo said.
Edmon Arzunyan will also be an alternate, finishing fifth in the 165 pound class.
“He continues to improve each time he takes to the mat. He beat some seeded wrestlers to earn his spot as an alternate for the States,” Russo said.
In the 190 pound bracket, Hagop Shahbazyan took fifth place.
“Hagop placed fifth for the second consecutive season,” Russo said. “He will be ready to wrestle as an alternate.”
Gavin Russo took sixth place in the 144 pound division, and beat a wrestler he had lost to earlier in the season along the way, Russo said.
