School Officials Pleased with Watertown’s Results in First Year of New State Test

The scores for the new MCAS exam are out, and the results pleased Watertown Public School officials. 

The Massachusetts Accountability System uses a different test, has different scores and different measures for how a school or district fared, said Watertown Superintendent Dede Galdston. She said, however, that the district fared well on the first year of the new test. “We are very pleased with our results,” Galdston said at Monday’s School Committee meeting. “Three (of five) schools met or exceeded the goals set by the state and one met it in some areas.” Cunniff and Lowell elementary schools and Watertown High School fell into the “not requiring assistance or intervention,” while Hosmer Elementary and Watertown Middle School fell into the “requiring assistance or intervention category, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Eduction (DESE) report.

Watertown’s Residence Inn by Marriott Sold for $71 Million

Watertown’s newest hotel has been sold for $71 million to a Texas-based real estate investment trust. The Residence Inn by Marriott on Arsenal Street was sold by Boylston Properties, the group that developed the hotel, to Summit Hotel Properties from Austin, Texas, according to a report on GlobeSt.com. Summit owns 77 hotels in 26 states, according to the report. Two Arrested After Attacking Three Seniors Outside a Watertown Home

A man and a woman face multiple charges after banging on a Watertown man’s door, and attacking him, his friend and the friend’s wife. Police received a report of a disturbance involving several people on the 300 block of Main Street at 10:22 p.m. on Sept. 26, said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. A man later identified as 21-year-old Reuben Urquiza-Cabrera, was seen attacking the homeowner. “When the officer arrived he saw Cabrera kicking a male with his foot,” O’Connor said.

Police Reveal More Details About Watertown Home Break Ins

Three Watertown homes were broken into and two more attempted break ins occurred last week at homes that were empty at the time, according to Watertown Police. The incidents took place between 8 p.m. on Sept. 26 and 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 27 in the area on and near Common Street, north of Orchard Street. The homes broke into were on Russell Avenue, Lovell Road and Common Street, and the attempted break ins were on Barnard Avenue and Lovell Road.

FEMA to Send Out Emergency Alert Test to Cellphones Wednesday

Expect to get an emergency test message on your cellphone on Wednesday when FEMA will be conducting a nationwide test. The Town of Watertown sent out the following information:

On Wednesday 10/3, at 2:18 pm EDT, FEMA will conduct a nationwide test of the Wireless Emergency Alert system in coordination with the FCC. Nominate Middle, High School Entrepreneurs for Chamber’s Awards

The Newton-Needham Regional Chamber provided the following announcement:
Each fall the Newton-Needham Regional Chamber recognizes two high or middle school students who demonstrate exceptional qualities around leadership, entrepreneurship and business. Past recipients have included students who’ve started their own business, created a unique app or product, or somehow demonstrated unique entrepreneurial skills.  
To qualify, students must currently reside in and/or attend a middle or high school in Newton, Needham, Watertown or Belmont and have not yet completed high school.
