Pedestrian Bridge Over Charles River in Watertown Being Replaced

The Joseph Thompson Pedestrian Bridge over the Charles River, west of Watertown Square, is out of commission for a while as the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) constructs a new span.

The new bridge will be less sloped than the present one, so that it meets ADA accessibility requirements, according to the DCR. Construction will be completed by the end of 2017, depending on weather and other factors, a DCR release said. The final work may not be finished until the spring of 2018. The total cost of the project will be $1.5 million, which includes fabricating a new bridge, remove the old bridge and construct a new supporting substructure elements – such as footings, abutments, and retaining walls.

Watertown Boys, Girls Basketball Teams Off to Hot Start

Both Watertown High School varsity basketball squads have enjoyed successful starts to their seasons, each only losing one game.

The boys, coached by Steve Harrington, have won eight straight after losing the opener against Arlington. The team spreads the scoring around, but the top scorers for most games are John Korte (who scored 21 against Wilmington and 24 at Burlington) and Jayden Hairston (who was the top scorer at Burlington with 18). Vondre Chase and Julio Fulcar routinely score in double figures, too. The Raiders have road games against Wakefield and Woburn before returning to host Lexington on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.

The girls basketball team dropped their first game of the season at Melrose last Friday.

Town Weighing What to Do with Old Watertown Police Station

Since the Watertown Police move to their new station the old one has largely sat unused, but many departments would love to get a piece of the building. Tuesday night, the Town Council’s Economic Development and Planning Committee reopened the discussion for how to deal with the building. The town had a study of the cost of renovating or reconstruction the building and received an estimate of $4.8 million to renovate and $7 million to rebuild, according to Assistant Town Manager Steve Magoon. The largest costs would be putting in an elevator and a stairwell. Those prices largely halted any plans to reuse the Police Station.
