Watertown Declares Snow Emergency, No On-Street Parking During Storm

Effective 6 p.m. on Saturday Jan. 7, the Town of Watertown is under a snow emergency, the Superintendent of Public Works declared. The Watertown Police sent out the following announcement:

On street parking is now banned, any motor vehicle left on the street will be subject to towing. Please assist the public works department by not parking on the street and allowing the public works vehicles full access to clear the streets. We would appreciate your assistance by clearing any snow from fire hydrants and catch basins in your area.

Watertown Man Featured in Magazine as Up-and-Coming Contractor

Local contractor Nick Portnoy went into the profession after learning carpentry working in the theater in college, but he has found a lack of skilled tradesmen available in the Boston area. Portnoy was recently featured in a story in This Old House Magazine about the next generation of tradesmen and women. As general contractor and owner of Nick Portnoy Builders, he looks for plumbers, electricians, painters, tilers and HVAC installers. He said the economic downturn forced many in the trades out of the business, but now that the industry has picked up again the people in the trades have not returned. “I have been in the business since 2007.

Police Log: Stolen Credit Card Used for Shopping Spree, Window Broken at High School

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests
Dec. 31, 1:12 p.m.: Police received a call about a man sleeping in his car and officers responded to check on his well being. They found the man in his car asleep at the wheel and he had open beer bottles, including one in the cup holder of the center console. Police awoke the man and performed field sobriety tests, and he passed all of them.

Perkins School for the Blind Hires Veteran Fundraiser as Chief Development Officer

Perkins School for the Blind has brought on a veteran fundraiser for non-profit organizations. David Whalen brings his 25 years experience to his new role as Chief Development Officer. He will oversee the Perkins Trust – which raises funds from a variety of sources to support Perkins’ programs and initiatives – and work with the Perkins leadership team to develop new funding opportunities that will allow Perkins to expand its mission, according to the announcement from the school. He previously worked with the New England Aquarium, Partners in Health and the Union of Concerned Scientists. Whalen said he enjoyed the energy he found when visiting the Perkins campus, and likened it to a start-up company.
