Watertown Beats Belmont in Annual Thanksgiving Day Football Clash

The Raiders make the short trip to Belmont for the annual Thanksgiving Day Football clash looking to add another win to a successful season, and extend the winning streak against the Marauders. 

The past four years, Watertown has emerged victorious from the game with their arch rivals, but it has not always been easy. Last year, the Raiders needed a late field goal to defeat the Marauders. The last time they visited Harris Field in 2014, however, Watertown came home with a 21-point victory. Construction in Watertown Square Parking Lot Will Stretch into December

The work on the municipal parking lot in Watertown Square, which currently has exposed cavernous holes, will not be completed on time, and will stretch at least a week past Thanksgiving. The work will improve stormwater drainage in the area along Spring Street near the municipal parking lot behind CVS, said Town Engineer Matthew Shuman. “The work was scheduled to be completed by Thanksgiving, but the contractor is a little behind schedule due to some unforeseen conditions, including an old building foundation,” said Shuman. “The work is now scheduled to be complete by December 5.” The parking lot remains open, but the amount of parking has been reduced.

The first week of this program will consist of pick-up games and then the teams will be selected. The teams will be made up of boys and girls from different grades. We will schedule games each week for each team.

Watertown is home to the best place to work in the Boston area, according to the Boston Globe’s annual survey. Bright Horizons Family Solutions topped the list of best places to work in 2016, and it is not the first time. The company has been No. 1 for four of the last six years, according to an announcement from Bright Horizons. The provider of child care, early education and other services is headquartered in the Arsenal on the Charles in Watertown, and has been around for three decades.

Watertown Runners Get Highest Ever Finishes for WHS at All-State Cross Country Meet

Two Watertown High School runners took on the best in Massachusetts and came away from the All-State Cross Country Meet with medals and best ever finishes for the Raiders at the state championship meet. 

Senior James Piccirilli ran the 5K race in a time of 16:51 and finished in eight place at in the Div. 2 boys race at the Gardner Municipal Golf Course. No boys runner from Watertown High School has placed that high in the All-State Meet, said Coach Tom Wittenhagen.

In the girls race, junior Emily Koufos ran a time of 19:48, which put her in 12th place in the Div. 2 race, also the best ever finish for the Raiders. Wittenhagen said both runners ran gutsy races on the most challenging course they had seen this year, with large hills.

Pair of Watertown Residents Attend Camp Champions Celebration at Fenway

Two Watertown residents attended the The American Camp Association, New England’s (ACA New England) Sixth Annual Camp Champions Celebration at Fenway Park recently. William Ford and Marjorie Goode were on hand for the celebration that recognized several campers who have received the gift of camp (camperships) through previous Camp Champions fundraising events. The celebration raises funds for ACA New England’s Campership Fund which helps send children in need to camp. The Camp Champions named by ACA New England in previous years have included Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Lisa Loeb (2015), camp philanthropist, Anna Gould (2014), actress and activist, Eliza Dushku (2013), former Mayor of Boston, Thomas M. Menino (2012) and June & Eliot Tatelman (2011).
