Public Invited to Forum on Bicycle Safety

The public is invited to a forum on bicycle safety being hosted by Massachusetts legislators on Feb. 23. The public forum on Massachusetts bicycle safety will focus specifically on large vehicle/cyclist crashes. Anecdotal evidence suggests that large vehicles (buses and trucks) are responsible for a disproportionate number of fatal crashes. The forum will bring together diverse stakeholder groups to build consensus around state legislative solutions to make cycling safer.

Watertown Man Killed in Skiing Accident at Vermont Resort

A Watertown man died after an accident while skiing on Monday afternoon in Vermont. Vermont State Police announced that Varter Shirinian, 58, of Watertown, died after he ran into a tree while skiing at the Burke Mountain ski resort at about 3:40 p.m. Monday. Shirinaian was skiing with his family on the Big Dipper Trial when he lost control and went into the woods where he collided with a tree, police said. He was not wearing a helmet during the accident and the incident remains under investigation but there are no signs of foul play, Vermont State Police said.

The Watertown Republican Town Committee (RTC) proudly and unanimously endorses Deborah (Debby) Dugan of Watertown in her race to become the next Republican State Committeewoman representing the Second Suffolk and Middlesex District. Debby, currently serves as the Secretary of the Watertown RTC; as well she is one of two Republican representatives on Watertown’s Board of Election Commissioners. Having served as elected member of Stillwater Elementary and Kittatinny Regional HS Boards of Education in New Jersey School, Debby also has experience as a candidate, public official, and as an activist. Over the years Debby has worked on several Republican campaigns both inside and outside the District. These efforts ranged from local school committee races, to various State Rep and State Senate races, ballot initiatives, and of course for our Statewide Republican Candidates. Debby is a selfless activist who dedicated to the cause of bring limited efficient government of Massachusetts.

Watertown Man Accused of Slashing 14 Tires at Rhode Island Casino

A Watertown man turned himself in to Lincoln, R.I., police after he allegedly slashed the tires on 14 vehicles at a Rhode Island Casino. Security video at Twin River Casino caught a man walking up vehicles and slashed tires, according to a news release from the casino. Police identified used surveillance and gaming information to identify the suspect as Jeffery C. Parillo, 43, of East Watertown, according to a Providence Journal report. Parillo turned himself in after police contacted him and said they were going to put out a warrant for his arrest. See the whole Providence Journal article by clicking here.

Police Log: Man Wanted for Groping 2 Women, 2 Homes Broken Into

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests
Feb. 4, 4:55 p.m.: A shoplifter from CVS ran from the store and was tracked down on Main Street. An employee saw the man take some items and place them in a bag before trying to leave without paying. When he was confronted by an employee the man gave back the items and left.

Watertown Runners Strut Their Stuff at the Div. 4 Championships

Watertown High School’s indoor track teams showed what they could do in the MIAA Div. 4 Indoor Track & Field Championship on Friday at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston. The Raiders had a pair of runners finish third and fourth in the boys 1000 meters. Senior Amin Touri ran a 2:37.16 and senior Jeremy Breen came in with a 2:38.09. Watertown sophomore Emily Koufos ran the 1000 in a time of 3:07.45 and placed fifth.

Find Out When a Shuttle Will Come to Town for Businesses, Residents

Town officials have been working on creating a shuttle system to serve the new developments in town, both business and residential, and Thursday night the consultant working on getting it off the ground said the small buses should be rolling in late 2016 or early 2017. Patrick Sullivan, of the 128 Business Council, gave an update on the creation of a Transportation Management Association (TMA) to the newly formed Town Council Ad Hoc Committee on Transportation. The goal of the TMA is to reduce the number of cars on the road in Watertown, as well as improve public transportation. Right now the it is focused on the main “spokes and hubs” in town and the town relies on the MBTA for service. Several new residential project have been built along Pleasant Street, and projects to build new apartment buildings and office developments have been approved for Arsenal Street.
