Weekend Fun: Bike Event Canceled, Watertown Pride, Yoga, Homebrewers & Martial Arts

UPDATE: City officials announced the Get Out Your Bike event has been canceled due to the forecast rain on Saturday. Let’s start the weekend at the Get Out Your Bike Event at the dock on the Charles River on Saturday morning. If you haven’t gotten out your bike yet, now is the time. You can have it checked for free or learn about Blue Bikes if you don’t have your own. In the afternoon you can exercise further with a Family Yoga class at Artemis Yoga.

The 2025 Herring Fest is Sunday at the Watertown Dam. Feeling feisty or even festy? This is the weekend to indulge in festivals, including, of course,  Watertown Porchfest on Saturday, a festival of local musicians that covers the whole town. While you probably know that already, you may not know about the festivals that surround Porchfest that add some variety to the weekend festivities. On Friday there is an art exhibit and an open mic comedy evening at Fort Gallery called Spring Harvest.

WEEKEND FUN: Mother’s Day Brunch, Children’s Theatre, Film on Greek Singer, Medicinal Plant Walk, Eco Fest

May flowers may have been brought by April showers, but there do seem to be plenty of May showers around as well. This weekend there are fun activities to accommodate both flowers and rain. You can start Friday evening with a unique film about a famous Greek musician, Stelios Kazantzidis at the Majestic 7. There is a Watertown Children’s Theater production of Hadestown with their high school aged actors on the weekend evenings or Saturday and Sunday matinees. On Saturday there is the first Watertown Eco Fest at the Commander’s Mansion that will be educational and fun.

WEEKEND FUN: Historic Home Tour, Kid’s Clothes Swap, Free Comic Books, Mount Auburn Cemetery Walk

Let’s start the weekend by saving money on children’s clothes. At the library on Friday afternoon there is a kid’s clothing swap. It’s good for the environment and your wallet, and there’s no need to worry about tariffs when buying used clothes! All day Saturday there will be a celebration going on at the Comic Stop, as they will be celebrating World Free Comic Book Day! It’s great fun for children and adults. Saturday afternoon, you can join a tour of Mount Auburn Cemetery.

“Self-Portrait as a Lion,” will be part of the Armenian Museum of America’s exhibit of the art of Varujan Boghosian. It’s the last weekend in April, and the earlier showers have brought out plenty of flowers already. I don’t have any Friday events, so simply hit the local streets to smell the flowers, view the YardArt and stretch your legs. All day Saturday there is a pottery sale at Indigo Fire Pottery Studio. They have a special discount on Intelligentsia coffee if you buy a vessel to put it in.

WEEKEND FUN: Creative Chats, Easter Egg Hunt, Shakespeare, Recycling Event, Dim Sum

You can start this weekend early, with a Friday morning Creative Chat at the Mosesian with the artist Cat Bennett. She is a lifelong professional artist who has written a couple of books about how to make art creation a practice in your life. An important Earth Day event on Saturday is the DPW recycling day. It’s time to get rid of your very old tax files or equally old textiles and styrofoam you’ve been collecting. If you arrive before it runs out, there’ll be giving away Black Earth compost. Also, our town tree warden is gifting baby oak trees!

WEEKEND FUN: Shakespeare, Egg Hunt, Passover Seder, Art Bike Ride, Music

ASP’s production of “Midsummer’s Night Dream” begins its run at the Mosesian Center for the Arts this weekend. Let’s start this weekend laughing along with Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Mosesian on Friday night. Then Saturday morning, should you have a young one in tow, get in the spring frame of mind with an egg hunt at the Brigham House. Saturday and Sunday evening there are community Seders for the beginning of Passover, the Jewish holiday that celebrates freedom and justice. Sunday morning hop on your bike and head to City Hall for a group bike tour of the town’s YardArt. There is an incredible range of artistic displays in people’s front yards.

WEEKEND FUN: Persian New Year, Armenian & Irish Music, Historical Event, National Tamale Day

Our bulbs are pushing their way up out of the warming gardens to tell us that spring is here. On Saturday morning, the spring celebration of Nowruz, the Persian New Year, will be at the library for all to enjoy. There is music to go along with the springing of spring, a concert of an Armenian trio at the Mosesian Center for the Arts on Friday, and a folk music concert on Saturday night at the Canadian American Club. On Sunday, it will be time for some history focused learning, with a talk on Watertown’s patriot printer, Benjamin Edes, whose printing press apparently affected the course of the Revolutionary War. After the talk, if you’re feeling hungry, head to the Condesa Restaurant to dig into a plate of steaming tamales for National Tamale Day.
