This event will be a unique opportunity to dive into big ideas and engage with big thinkers on the power of storytelling. 9th Annual Authors & Innovators Business Ideas Festival

Each year since 2017, attorney Larry Gennari has been channeling his passion for entrepreneurship, collaboration, and reading into free events promoting innovative and provocative ideas from great business book authors. This fall, the chamber is pleased to once-again be partnering with Larry and his Needham-based firm Gennari & Aronson on the 2024 Authors & Innovators Business Ideas Festival in Watertown

This two-day festival will be jam-packed with insights, idea exchange, and thoughtful, intelligent conversation.

OP-ED: Housing for All Group Seeks More Affordable Housing in Watertown Square Area Plan

At a recent meeting of the Housing for All Watertown group, speakers touted the group’s success in its effort to deliver “the most ambitious MBTA Communities Act plan in the state.” Now the group is shifting gears to focus on getting more affordable housing as part of the plan. In Watertown, the YIMBY (Yes In My Back Yard) movement is alive and kicking. Members of the grassroots group say that the next step is to bring a greater number of affordable units into Watertown Square. Communities served by the T are required to submit rezoning plans (under the 2021 MBTA law) that would allow for building multifamily housing. 

To that goal, the Watertown group has come up with an “affordable housing bonus plan.” The idea is to increase the incentives for developers to build up if their plans meet certain affordable housing guidelines. As it now stands, the Watertown Square rezoning lacks robust incentives for including affordable housing in new buildings.

Watertown High School Hosting Soccer Night Oct. 26 at Victory Field

Mark your calendars! Watertown High School Boys Soccer is hosting Watertown Soccer Night on Saturday, October 26th, at Victory Field, and it’s going to be a fun-filled evening for the whole community. The night kicks off with a Senior Night ceremony at 5 PM, where we’ll honor our WHS Boys Soccer seniors. Their parents, caregivers, and families will join them on the field as we celebrate everything they’ve achieved during their time with the program. At 6 PM, the WHS Boys Varsity team will take on Reading in an exciting match under the lights.

Watertown Police Officer Saves Woman from Burning House

The Watertown Police Department posted the following announcement on its Facebook page. Friday, October 11, 2024, Officer Michael Grzelcyk demonstrated extraordinary bravery during a working house fire on Winsor Ave. Upon arrival, he learned that a second-floor tenant, an elderly woman, was still inside. With Watertown Fire en route, Officer Grzelcyk entered the burning building alone, facing intense smoke and flames. Despite zero visibility, he made verbal contact with trapped woman.

See What’s Closed for Indigenous Peoples/Columbus Day & Trash Collection Schedule

Several municipal buildings will be closed for on Monday, Oct. 14 for the Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day holiday. See the information provided by the City of Watertown. Watertown City Hall, Parker Annex, Department of Public Works Offices, Senior Center and the Watertown Free Public Library are closed on Monday, October 14, 2024 in observance of Indigenous Peoples Day/Columbus Day. Please be aware that there is a one-day delay for trash and recycling pickup due to the holiday.

Watertown Welcomes New Chief Technology Officer

Join City Manager George Proakis in welcoming Maurice A. Myrie as the City of Watertown’s new Chief Technology Officer! Maurice joins the Watertown team with nearly 12 years of Chief Information/Technology Officer experience (CIO/CTO). Most recently with the Town of Duxbury, Maurice managed the Town’s and school district’s information technology strategies and initiatives as their CTO since October 2022. Prior to that, Maurice was the CIO of the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office for nearly 10 years.
