It’s Not Too Late to Sign Up for the Watertown Helps Out Day of Service

There’s still time to sign up to volunteer in this Saturday’s Watertown Helps Out event, hosted by Watertown Community Foundation. Watertown Helps Out!, the fifth annual Community Day of Service, kicks off Saturday, May 5, 8:30 a.m. at the Hosmer School Cafeteria. Join us on Saturday, May 5, 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Hosmer School Cafeteria for light refreshments. Then get a T-shirt and head out to your chosen project! Projects can be anything from gardening and yard work, assembling raised beds, cleaning trash from bicycle paths and parks or washing furniture in a community center. Most run from 10:00 a.m. to mid-afternoon, and many can be done for as little as an hour.

Join Live Well Watertown’s free healthy eating and cooking class where you can learn to make a Southwest Veggie Grain Bowl.

Marshall Home Fund Presenting Grants at Awards Ceremony

The following information was provided by the Marshall Home Fund:

Please join the Marshall Home Fund at its annual Program Grant Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 15, 3:30 p.m. at the Watertown Public Library. The MHF will distribute a total of $70,000 to the following organizations for programs that will benefit Watertown’s older adults: MetroWest Community Development, Mosesian Center for Arts, New Repertory Theater, Perkins School for the Blind, Project Literacy, Springwell, Watertown Council on Aging, Watertown Families Together, Watertown Farmer’s Market. Watertown Fire
Department, Watertown Health Department, Wayside Youth and Family Support. Established in 2005, the Marshall Home Fund is a nonprofit, community-based charitable foundation dedicated to serving Watertown’s older adult population. MHF also provides financial assistance to elderly individuals in urgent need.

MBTA Seeks Public Input on 5-Year Spending Plan, Hosting Series of Meetings

The following was sent out by MassDOT and the MBTA:
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced that public meetings to present and discuss the Draft MassDOT and MBTA Capital Investment Plan (CIP) Update for Fiscal Years 2019–2023 will be held in May and that the public comment period for the draft CIP will open on May 15 and close on June 4.  Public comments may be submitted by email to masscip@state.ma.us. The draft CIP is multi-billion dollar investment portfolio  and includes all MassDOT highway and bridge projects, regional airports, rail and transit, including MBTA and Regional Transit Authorities as well as the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Public participation is essential to the success of the CIP. The public meetings are scheduled as follows:

Watertown Group Showing Movie on Plastic Straws, Environmental Fair

A Watertown citizens group announced it will host the showing of the Movie Straws, by Linda Booker and narrated by Tim Robbins. The group sent out the following information:

ReThink Plastic and The Watertown Public Library will co-sponsor a screening of the film, STRAWS, on Tuesday, May 15, at 7pm, in the Watertown Savings Bank Room at the Watertown Free Public Library. This film is great for all ages and even features some youth activists. The 33-minute film will be followed by an environmental fair with information about reducing plastic pollution in our lives and reducing the use of plastic straws in particular.

A medication drop-box is available 24/7 in the front lobby. Liquids or syringes are not accepted.
