DPW Earth Day Event Will Include Styrofoam & Mattress Recycling, Paper Shredding & Get a Sapling

The following information was provided by the Department of Public Works:

Watertown Public Works will be hosting an Earth Day Event on Saturday April 19, 2025, from 10:00am – 2:00pm at the Jewish Community Day School Parking Lot – 57 Stanley Ave, for Watertown residents only (bring your ID). The event includes paper shredding, $25 mattress recycling, free dehumidifier turn in, styrofoam collection, a clothing drive, finished compost/soil give away, and baby oak trees giveaway. HandUp, a mattress recycler, will be offering a discount on mattress and box spring recycling. Each unit will be $25 (and the City will pay the other $25). This is a first come, first serve option, until the truck is full.

Small Saves Makes Vacation Plans in This Week’s Comic

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal – then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”

Turtle Studios Participating in Newton Open Studios & Art Sale

The following information was provided by Turtle Studios:

Turtle Studios will participate for the third consecutive year in the Newton Open Studios art exhibition and sale on the weekend of April 5 & 6, 2025, at 213 California Street, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Turtle Studios has a dynamic and eclectic mix of members, including several Watertown residents, whose art pursuits enrich their lives and community, who share the joy of artmaking in a supportive community that values the creative process, experimentation, and self-expression,” and will be joined by a handful of guest artists who will also display and sell. The Turtle Studios site will showcase 15 artists selling paintings, prints, textiles, jewelry, book arts, collages, and more. 

Newton Open Studios is free, open to the public, and family-friendly. Gourmet gift baskets will be raffled off, with proceeds benefiting Turtle Studios, a non-profit 501(c)(3), and its Scholarship Fund. Vendors handle their sales, and typically accept cash or credit through Venmo, Square or PayPal.

Massage Aide Raising Funds for Doctors Without Borders in Ukraine

The following announcement was provided by Diane Crowley, LMT:

Volunteer massage therapists and Reiki practitioners are holding a fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders with all funds earmarked to help the people of Ukraine. You can choose to have a chair massage, a relaxation table massage, sports table massage, a seated Reiki treatment or table Reiki treatment. Reiki is a Japanese energy form of healing. All services are 15 minutes long and cost $20. If you would like a 30 minute treatment you can book a double treatment for $40.

On March 26, Representatives of Watertown Boys & Girls Club joined their colleagues from across the state for the Massachusetts Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs’ 22nd Annual Legislative Luncheon and Advocacy Day at the State House on Beacon Hill. Club staff, youth members, boards of directors, and elected officials were in attendance from across the Commonwealth. The event featured remarks from State Representative John Lawn, State Senator Brendan Crighton, State Senator Michael Rodrigues, Boys & Girls Club of America Hall of Famer “Marvelous” Marvin McIntyre, and Haybi Garcia, 2024 Massachusetts Youth of the Year and alumnus of the Waltham Boys & Girls Club.
