After a Delay, School Committee Adopts Goals for Watertown Schools

After months of contemplation and delays due to changes in the district, the School Committee adopted the district’s Goals and Priorities at Monday night’s School Committee meeting. The Watertown Public School’s three strategic goals are: Support High Academic Achievement, Foster the Capacity for Life-Long Learning and Promote Local and Global Citizenship. The goals normally come out early in the school year, but School Committee Chairman John Portz said there have been some delays this year. “The process started in August. It started as goals for the superintendent, but then we we had a transition,” Portz said, referring to Jean Fitzgerald’s sudden retirement in October.

See How You Can Support the Friends of Watertown Music

To support music in Watertown’s schools, Friends of Watertown Music was formed in the summer of 2011 in response to severe budget cuts in the Watertown Public Schools music program, the said in an announcement. Since then, through the generosity of our donors, we have awarded three major grants and several small grants totaling over $18,000 to the Watertown Public Schools in order to expand and enhance music instruction. Additionally, through grants from outside institutions, we have acquired approximately $15,000 worth of new instruments to be used by students in all of Watertown’s public schools. Friends of Watertown Music continues to prioritize using donations to make grants that expand teaching staff and support teacher-student interaction. We also seek grants from outside sources to provide instruments to expand opportunities for students to learn to play instruments. MassBay College Offers Two-Week Winter Intersession Courses

MassBay Community College announced that registration is open for winter intersession courses. Winter intersession courses are two-week intensive courses offered for credit and non-credit at MassBay. This is a chance for high school students, area college students visiting on winter break and/or enrolled MassBay students to take courses in a short timeframe to help get ahead in their studies, earn college credits quickly, or get a step closer to graduation. “Intercession is a wonderful opportunity for students to take care of general education requirements or pre-requisites for advanced coursework,” said MassBay Director of Admissions Alison McCarty. “Students interested in any of our nursing programs, for example, can take Biology 101 in just 10 days over Winter Intersession in order to be able to take Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology in the spring.

Minuteman Hosting Career Day to Show Vocational Programs Available to Students

Middle School students interested in finding out about the programs offered by Minuteman High School can attend Career Day to see the different programs offered by the school in Lexington. While Watertown is not a member of the Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical School District, they can enroll when there is space. In 2015-16 about 70 students from town attended the vocational school. The Minuteman Career Day/Open House will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2016 from 1-4 p.m. at the campus located at 758 Marrett Road in Lexington. Minuteman released the following information:

Career Day is an opportunity to explore all 15 of our Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Each area will showcase hands-on activities.

MassBay College Hosting Tech Internship Speed Interviewing Event

Massachusetts Bay Community College’s STEM Division will hold its bi-annual Technology Internship Program (TIP) Speed Interviewing Event on Thursday, December 1, 2016 8:45-11 a.m., MassBay officials announced. Local employers who are looking for workforce-ready IT/Computer Science interns are encouraged to sign up to participate in this speed interviewing event. This 2-hour event, based on the speed dating concept, allows employers to interview MassBay students for quick 7-10 minute interviews, to see if there might be a possible match for an internship. This is a great opportunity for local companies to connect with students for potential internships or employment. Students can help businesses in a variety of ways including; help desk support, querying databases, general reporting, diagnose and repair laptops, install hardware and software, support a network environment, provide cybersecurity strategies, redesign your website, develop site content/graphics/banners, support data driven websites, programming and more.

Lowell School Students Send a Message of Peace Before Thanksgiving

Lowell School took one of their core values and ran with it, creating a bit of a Facebook sensation. The day before Thanksgiving, the school held a kindness assembly, said Lowell’s interim principal Phil Oates. “It was facilitated by Eileen Donahue, our physical education teacher,” Oates said. “She taught the kids a rhyming kindness message that we all said together as a school.” Donahue, who is also coach of the Watertown High School field hockey team, took photos of children doing acts of kindness and featured them during the presentation.

Watertown SEPAC Hosting Local Director of Federation for Children with Special Needs

Watertown SEPAC invites the public to a meeting with the project director of the MassPAC, a project Federation for Children with Special Needs. Leslie M. Leslie joined the MassPAC project at the Federation for Children with Special Needs in February of 2011 – a role which includes providing technical assistance to Special Education Parent Advisory Council leaders, coordinating Leadership Institutes, monitoring the statewide MassPAC Listserve, maintaining the membership database and MassPAC website and writing educational materials. The Federation for Children with Special Needs is a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) organization that advocates for quality education, parent participation, and access to quality health care services for all children, especially those with disabilities. Leslie is the mother of two young adult sons, both of whom face learning challenges. Leslie holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Political Science from Tufts University and a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School.

Lowell School Hosts Second Annual Public Book Fair on Dec. 4

The second annual Lowell Public Book Fair is coming up on Sunday, Dec. 4 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Lowell Gym, the school announced. 

Browse books for all ages (board books up to adult books), a focus on the K-5 grades. There will be new releases such as the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid and the new JK Rowling Fantastic Beast. Many options for holiday gifts with toys, science kits and more. All proceeds will go directly to the Lowell Elementary School Library.
