Watertown Runners Strut Their Stuff at the Div. 4 Championships

Watertown High School’s indoor track teams showed what they could do in the MIAA Div. 4 Indoor Track & Field Championship on Friday at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston. The Raiders had a pair of runners finish third and fourth in the boys 1000 meters. Senior Amin Touri ran a 2:37.16 and senior Jeremy Breen came in with a 2:38.09. Watertown sophomore Emily Koufos ran the 1000 in a time of 3:07.45 and placed fifth.

World Marathon Challenge Winner Becca Pizzi Coming to Race at Donohue’s

The woman who recently ran seven marathons on seven continents in seven days will be in Watertown for a 5K race this weekend. Donohue’s sent out the following announcement:

We are honored to welcome the first american woman’s World Marathon Challenge winner Becca Pizzi to our “Run Your Heart Out” 5K. She is joining us for a meet and greet and will autograph your race bib. She will be showing off her bling and her wonderful spirit. Please join us for the 5K after party at Donohue’s Bar and Grill.

Watertown’s Basketball Teams Took on Belmont, With Mixed Results

The Watertown girls basketball team secured their place in the postseason tournament with a 46-34 win at rivals Belmont on Tuesday. The victory ups the Raiders’ record to 11-2 for the season. In a defensive struggle that saw the game tied at 34 with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Watertown dominate the final two-minutes-and-20-seconds scoring the final 12 points of the game – including 10 from the free-throw line – as the Raiders drained a total of 19 points from the charity strip in the match. Junior Shannon Murphy scored four of her 10 points in the final two minutes while senior captain Katelyn Rourke had a team-high 16 points, hitting a pair of baskets and free throws in the last quarter. The Watertown boys basketball team could not find an answer for Belmont’s power forward Paul Ramsey as the junior scored a career-high 23 points including 13 in the decisive third quarter as Belmont took its record to 11-2 with the 69-60 win over the Raiders on Tuesday.

WHS Sports: Girls Hockey Player Honored, Wrestling Winning and More

Watertown girls hockey player Aurora Fidler was named a player of the week by the Boston Globe for scoring two goals in the Raiders 3-2 win over Woburn. Watertown also got a stellar performance from goalie Jonna Kennedy, who made 52 saves. Wrestlers Collect Trio of Wins
Watertown’s wrestlers dominated a quad meet and beat all three opponents, according a story on Wicked Local Watertown. The Raiders defeated Northbridge (36­-18), Gloucester (48­-18), and Josiah Quincy Upper School (42­-18). Among the top performers were Alek Kebabjian (160 pounds), Nick Stanizzi (106), and Farid Mawanda (152) who all went 2-0 during the meet.

Boston College Hockey Coach Jerry York Claims his 1,000th Win

This week, Boston College’s Jerry York did something no other college hockey coach has done – win 1,000 games. 

The Watertown native and resident was already the all-time winningest coach, but on Friday the Eagles wiped out UMass 8-0 in Amherst to claim #JY1K, as the Boston College Athletic Department has dubbed the accomplishment. Boston College will celebrate York’s 1,000th win during JY1K Night 0n Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, before the game against New Hampshire. York’s career record is 1,000-595-109 (.619) in 44 seasons after BC’s 3-3 tie with UConn on Saturday. A majority of his wins came at his alma mater but before returning to The Heights he coached at Bowling Green in Ohio and Clarkson in New York’s North Country.

WHS Sports: Basketball Teams Enjoy Successful Week, Track Claims Win at Relays

The Watertown basketball team enjoyed a good week against two Middlesex League opponents. The boys basketball team beat Melrose 53-43 on Tuesday to claim its third straight win. Senior Derek Diepietrantonio scored 24 points, and sophomore John Korte grabbed a double-double, according to the report on Wicked Local Watertown. The Raiders winning streak ended Friday with a 58-49 loss at Wakefield. Watertown is now 4-5.

SPORTS UPDATE: WHS Basketball & Hockey, and Amateur Boxing

Watertown’s girls basketball team got back on track after suffering its first loss of the year. 

The Raiders went to Stoneham on Tuesday and won 57-27, with Katelyn Rourke and Nicole Lanzo scoring a combined 33 points. Friday night, Watertown came home and defeated Wilmington 58-37. The Raiders are now 7-1 and 6-0 in the Middlesex League. Boys Basketball

AAU Basketball Team Hosting Tryouts for Boys, Girls in Grades 4-11

The ASA Mass Wildcats AAU basketball team will hold tryouts for girls and boys in grades 4-11 in January. The tryouts will be held on Jan. 16 – click here to see the schedule. The girls program is led by Watertown High School girls basketball coach Pat Ferdinand, and will have tryouts at the Meadowbank School in Weston. The boys will have tryouts in a variety of locations, including Newton, Framingham and Southborough.
