Watertown High Grad Attends NCAA Convention Representing Simmons University

Former Watertown High School field hockey player Emily Sideris, who now manages Daly Field for Simmons University, recently got to participate in her first NCAA Convention. Sideris attended the national collegiate athletics event in San Antonio during the week of Jan. 11-14, where new legislative proposals for governing the NCAA and college athletics were discussed, the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year was awarded, and other issues were touched on during small-group discussions, such as mental health, student-athlete experience. She also met different members of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, in which Simmons competes. 

The convention took place before former Governor Charlie Baker took over as NCAA President. 

Sideris enters her second year as the Manager of Daly Field Facilities and Athletic Operations at Simmons University. Daly Field is located across the Charles River from Watertown in Brighton.

Youth Sports Grants Available From Watertown Community Foundation

The Watertown Community Foundation (WCF) announces the 2023 application process is now open for Youth Sports Leagues Grants. These grants provide funding to eligible organizations to offer scholarship support to Watertown youth from kindergarten to high school. Examples of programs eligible for Youth Sports Leagues Grants include:

• Baseball/Softball• Football/Cheerleading• Soccer• Basketball• Lacrosse• Hockey

WCF Youth Sports Leagues Grants will help pay for sports registration fees or equipment for student athletes who otherwise cannot afford to play. “Many children cannot participate in organized sports due to the cost and some of the volunteer youth league coaches assume the added burden of paying player’s fees themselves.” said Mary Ann Mulligan, WCF Board Co-President. The goal is to help reduce financial barriers and allow more Watertown youth to participate in team sports.

Replacing Victory Field Turf with New Artificial Surface Supported by School Committee

Charlie BreitroseVictory Field is home to Watertown High School’s football team, along with the field hockey, girls and boys soccer, boys and girls lacrosse, and baseball teams.

On Feb. 6, the School Committee supported the recommendation to replace the artificial turf surface at the field most used by Watertown High School’s athletic teams, however some did so with strong reservations because it would be a different type of artificial turf. The artificial turf field at Victory Field is nearing the end of its recommended life. The City plans to replace it with another artificial turf, but with an organic material between the plastic blades of grass. The final decision on whether to approve the project will come from the City Council, and the funding would come from the City’s budget, not the Schools.

Skate-a-Thon Raising Money for Watertown Youth Hockey, Honoring Mom Who Passed Away

The following announcement was provided by Watertown Youth Hockey:

Watertown Youth Hockey invites the community to come out and support our annual Skate-a-Thon fundraiser. Our players will skate 50 laps in 50 minutes! The event will take place on Tuesday, February 14th at the John A. Ryan Arena. 

Our youngest skaters in the Learn to Play program and Mites will skate at 6:30 p.m. and the Squirts, Peewees and the Middle School Team at 7:30 p.m. 

This year our hockey moms will take the ice for a lap in honor of Jami Curley, beloved hockey mom and cherished member of the Watertown community, who passed away in January. Please join us in remembering and honoring Jami at 7:30 p.m.

WHS Sports: Hockey Team Hot, Big Comeback by Boys Hoops, Runners on Right Track

Charlie BreitroseThe Watertown boys hockey seeks another trip to the Final Four and the Final at the TD Garden after finishing runner-up in 2022. The 2022-23 season has been a hot and cold one for the Watertown High School boys hockey. The Raiders appear to be heating up in the latter half of the season as they look to return to the Garden for a second straight state final. The Raiders started the season winning four of their first seven games, and tying one. Then Watertown dropped four of six, and added another tie.

Watertown Grad Inspired by Legendary Coaches in Her Work for Northeastern Athletics

Tory Boyle. Born and raised in Watertown, Tory Boyle has been influence from some great coaches at various levels, and has combined her love of sports and marketing into a career. Recently, she joined the Northeastern Athletics Department as an Assistant Athletic Director. In her new role, Boyle leads Game Day Marketing & Innovation for Northeastern sports, and oversees three employees. “Game day presentation is anything that happens during the game that is not the teams playing the sports themselves: music, announcements, anything on video board and promotions,” Boyle said.

4 Watertown Athletes Garner Boston Globe All-Scholastic Honors

Charlie BreitroseWatertown senior co-captain Maggie Driscoll shoots the ball in the 2022 State Final. Driscoll was named the Div. 3 Player of the Year by the Boston Globe. The Fall season had many highlights for Watertown High School teams — including a state championship and a rivalry victory at Fenway Park. For their role in the successful season, four Raiders received All-Scholastic honors from the Boston Globe.
