Watertown Football Battled Strong Wilmington Team Friday Night

The Watertown football team lead Wilmington for the whole first half of the Raiders final regular season home game, but fell 32-17. Watertown took the lead on a first quarter 3-yard touchdown run by fullback Edward Ferreira, and then doubled the lead when quarterback Nick McDermott scored on a 1-yard run. A 39-yard field goal by Conor Kennelly gave the Raiders a 17-8 halftime lead. However, Wilmington (4-1) held Watertown scoreless the rest of the game and running back John Kenny scored two of his three touchdowns in the second half to lead the Wildcats to the victory. The loss drops the Raiders’ record to 3-2, and 1-2 in the Middlesex League.

New Co-op Girls Swimming Team Earns First Victory Over Burlington

The fledgling Arlington-Watertown girls swimming team got its first taste of success over the weekend when the team defeated Burlington 52-41 for its first dual meet win. 

The team is a cooperative team and includes swimmers from both high schools, including six from Watertown. While Arlington has had a program for several years, this is Watertown’s first swim team. Head coach Aldar Su said it took a little bit of adjustment, but the students from different schools have come together over the first few weeks. “It took a couple of weeks for them to warm up to each other,” Su said. “That’s the nice thing with fall sports.

One of WHS’s Most Competitive Athletes, Maxwell Kerman, Going into Hall of Fame

Maxwell Kerman competed hard in everything he did, whether it was on the football field or the basketball court. He played 3 years of football and 4 years of basketball for Watertown High. In one football game alone in a big win over Winchester as a junior, he contributed two rushing touchdowns, kicked four extra points, and chipped in defensively with an interception, a fumble recovery, and a half-dozen tackles.  But it was in the gym where everything came together for the two-time Globe and one-time Herald hoops All-Scholastic. By the time he graduated in 2006, the two-time captain and three-time Middlesex league All-Star was the vaunted basketball program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,522 points, all-time leading rebounder, third in assists and steals, fourth in three-pointers and single season points. But in reality, that is only just a small part of the Kerman story.

Field Hockey Player Jay Quinn Will Enter WHS Athletic Hall of Fame in October

Growing up near Victory Field, it was impossible for Jay Quinn, Class of 2002, not to be aware of the tremendous history and success of the Red Raider Field Hockey program. In addition, her older sister Lauren was among the Middlesex League’s best players and leading scorer during her WHS career before playing 4 years at Princeton. Though she played youth soccer growing up in town, Jay also had a close friendship with Hall of Famers Bethany, Jane, Catherine and Mary Rogers, which eventually led her down the fortuitous path to WHS field hockey, its winning tradition, and success as a Captain, All-American, and State Champion. Quinn jokingly told us that after her first practice as a freshman she could barely walk. The program was coming off its seventh overall state title, and she couldn’t wait to be part of the prodigious program.

Raiders Football Runs to Victory With Big Second Half Against Burlington

The Watertown High School football team used an explosive running attack to roll over Burlington 35-20 on Thursday night at Victory Field. After scoring frequently through the air in its first three games, the Raiders turned to the ground game in a rare Thursday night contest. All five touchdowns came off running plays. Watertown junior running back Mange Camara opened the fourth quarter with a 65-yard scoring sprint. The touchdown was his third of the game.

2001 Field Hockey Claimed 8th State Title, Going into WHS Hall of Fame

The Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame presented the following profile:

By the time fall came around in 2001, the nine returning seniors on the field hockey
team already had an impressive resume. The program had won three straight
Middlesex League titles, multiple players earned substantial awards, including
League MVP, All-Scholastic, and even All-American. But one big albatross loomed
large over Victory field during the heat of August and steam of pre-season practice. None of the nine was a State Champion. The Red Raiders made it all the way to the title game during their sophomore campaign, only to lose a heart-breaking overtime thriller.

Basketball Star Anthony Coppola Joining WHS Athletic Hall of Fame

Like many of the esteemed student-athletes in the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame, Anthony Coppola, class of 2007, was a multi-sport athlete. But it was in the gym and on the basketball court under the direction of Hall of Fame coach, Steve Harrington, where he was most dynamic and successful. The WHS Athletic Hall of Fame sent out the following profile:

“Anthony was relentless,” Harrington told us. “He had tunnel vision all the time, but especially as a senior, when we knew as a program we could make a good run at the program’s first State Title.” And after a grinding 18 game Middlesex League schedule, a brutal battle through the D3 North sectionals, a glorious trip to the Boston Garden, and four clutch free-throws by the cool, calm, and collected Coppola down the stretch to cap a nail biting one point victory in Worcester, the Red Raiders did indeed get to hoist the trophy. Like many of Harington’s troops, Coppola started out at the Boys and Girls Club playing Biddy Basketball.

Boston Bruins Alumni Playing in Watertown to Help Science Club for Girls

On October 7 the Boston Bruins Alumni will be playing against Team Salesforce in a benefit game for Science Club for Girls (scienceclubforgirls.org) at the John A. Ryan Arena. 

Former Bruins scheduled to participate include Terry O’Reilly, Rick Middleton, Ken Linesman, Mike Milbury, Andy Brickley, Bob Sweeney, Tim Sweeney, Ken Hidge Jr., Reggie Lemelin, Bruce Shoebottom, Bob Beers, Jean-Yves Roy and more! All proceeds benefit SCFG’s mission to foster excitement, confidence and literacy in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) for girls from underrepresented communities by providing free, experiential programs and maximizing meaningful interactions with women mentors in STEM. Today, SCFG serves more than 1,400 young woman across 24 community-based centers each year.
