Watertown Field Hockey Claims 9th Straight North Section Title

NORTH ANDOVER – The Raiders had their hands full for much of the North Section Div. 2 final against Ipswich, on Saturday, but Watertown pulled away for the 3-1 win at North Andover High School. The win gave the Raiders their ninth straight North Section title, and Watertown seeks its eighth straight State Championship. The first half of a rough and tumble game with the team from the Cape Ann League ended 0-0. Watertown co-captain and senior Kourtney Kennedy changed that early in the second half, banging home a goal 2 minutes into the second stanza.

Watertown’s Football Playoff Drive Ended by Triton in North Section Final

The Raiders battled hard to keep their MIAA football tournament run alive, but a combination of a hot Triton offense and turnovers resulted in a 42-36 loss for Watertown in the North Section Div. 3 final at Victory Field, Friday night. After scoring first on a Deon Smith to John Korte 19-yard pass, the Raiders (8-2) suddenly found themselves down 21-6. Triton quarterback Lewis L’Heureux scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground, and then the Vikings scooped up an errant lateral and ran for a third score. Watertown’s spirit would not been held down despite, however, and they battled back again and again.

WHS Sports: Golf Team Honored for Sportsmanship, Volleyball Plays in Tourney

The Watertown High School golf team may not have had its best season in terms of wins and losses, but the players still received statewide recognition. Longtime WHS golf coach Jim Travers told the Boston Globe that this year’s golf team was one of his favorites. The 2016 golf team received the MIAA’s Sportsmanship Award for Div. 3 schools. The team had a lot of newcomers because the Raiders lost so many players to graduation that they did not have enough experienced players to field a team for Middlesex League matches.

WHS Sports: 4 Raiders Teams in State Tournament Action Over the Weekend

This weekend,  Watertown High School had teams playing in the football, field hockey, boys soccer and volleyball state tournaments. 
Volleyball
The Watertown High School volleyball team cliched its first state tournament birth ever during the last regular season match. The Raiders (11-9) then had another first, claiming their first tourney win by sweeping host West Roxbury 3-0 last Thursday. Watertown will travel to take on Middlesex League rival Burlington (18-3) on Monday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. in the North Section Div. 2 quarterfinal.

Watertown Beats Newburyport, Moves on to North Section Football Final

The Raiders kept on rolling through the MIAA football playoffs Friday night with a 27-10 victory over Newburyport in the North Section semifinal. Watertown (8-1) got two touchdowns from senior co-captain Vasken Kebabjian in the win at Victory Field on Friday night. The first came in the first quarter when he caught an 8-yard pass from senior quarterback Deon Smith to stake a 7-0 lead. Newburyport (3-5) got a second quarter field goal, but the Raiders got to touchdowns to lead 20-3 at half. Senior Zach Rimsa scored from one-yard out, and then Kebabjian got his second ran one in from 28 yards out.

Second Half Scoring Burst Pushes Watertown Field Hockey Past Weston

The Raiders had a game on their hands for the first 30 minutes of the North Section field hockey quarterfinal Friday afternoon against Weston, leading just 1-0. However, the first minute of the second half set the tone for the rest of the game. Watertown senior Aurora Fidler scored just 56 seconds in to the second half on a pass from Lauren Petrillo, which doubled the Raiders’ lead. Senior Kourtney Kennedy scored the team’s lone first half goal with an assist from sophomore Gabby Venezia. Next it was the underclassmen’s turn to add to Watertown’s total.
