Watertown Community Foundation Awards Inaugural Community Engagement Grants

The following announcement was provided by the Watertown Community Foundation:

The Watertown Community Foundation awarded $53,185 to support 21 programs in the inaugural cycle of the Community Engagement Grant Program. Funded programs will strengthen community connections, increase access to programs and services, and foster intercultural communication and understanding in Watertown.

Weather Forecast: Another Rainy Weekend, Warmer Temps During the Week

Who’s ready for another rainy weekend? Eastern Massachusetts heads into mid-June with a few ups and downs still in store. Friday brings pleasant weather, but the weekend trend turns wet yet again with clouds, cool air, and the return of scattered rain. Saturday looks particularly unsettled and unseasonably chilly. Sunday offers a small improvement, but remains damp and gray. The pattern resets Monday with sunshine and a slow warming trend. By mid-to-late next week, summer heat may finally stage a comeback, with highs climbing into the 80s and more typical June humidity. I still don’t see any prolonged heat or humidity in our future — possibly not until July.

Children’s Author, Newbery Award Honoree Grace Lin to Visit Library to Kick Off Read About Town

Summer reading is for everyone! This year, the Watertown Free Public Library (WFPL) is inviting all ages to Read About Town and complete reading challenges inspired by Watertown landmarks.For younger readers ages 5 – 11, there’s also a chance to get a book signed by Newbery Honoree Grace Lin! Here’s a look at everything the Library has planned:

June 16 – August 22 | All Ages | Children, teens, and adults invited to pick up a Read About Town map at the Library and complete reading challenges inspired by our local community! While getting familiar with some Watertown landmarks, you’ll collect stickers for your map and earn raffle tickets for fabulous prizes at the library. Play solo, play as a team, or play as a family.

WEEKEND FUN: Art, Music, Dancing, Writing & Tour the 2 Oldest Homes in Town

I suggest you start off the weekend on Friday afternoon at the Armenian Museum of America to see their current exhibit of art by Varujan Boghosian. What an interesting mix of media he uses, including painting and collage! A Saturday morning trip to the Revival Café will not only include the requisite espresso or tea drinks, but also some music played by Jamie Kallestad, a local folk musician. If you’re feeling more contemplative than social Saturday morning, try out the Morning Writes workshop at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Saturday night, head to Conley’s Pub & Grill for a dance night with a live DJ. We don’t have a lot of  dancing spots in town, so be sure to take advantage of this night at Conley’s. On Sunday, take your tired danced-out legs to free tours of two old Watertown homes where you can learn about how people lived in town in the 17th and 18th centuries. I wonder if they had dancing spots in town back then.
