WHS Girls Basketball Highly Ranked, Boys Hockey Skates to First Win

The Watertown High School girls basketball team lost only once last year, and the Raiders may have even more expectations according to the polls. The Boston Herald ranked Watertown third in Eastern Massachusetts Pre-Season Poll, ESPN Boston ranks the Raiders third in their MIAA Girls Basketball Poll and the Boston Globe has Watertown fifth in its Top 20. Among MIAA Div. 2 North squads, the Raiders are at the top, according to the Herald. Other squads in the North to contend with are Arlington Catholic and Belmont, the team the Raiders beat in the Section Semifinal last year, according to the Heralds’ Girls Div.

Watertown Hockey Teams Raise Banners at Home Openers

Saturday was a day of celebration for the Watertown High School hockey teams as they each unveiled championship banners, but the day’s games did not leave the teams in a cheery mood. Last March, the Raiders boys hockey team won the school’s first state championship. Before the first home game against Winchester, Watertown unveiled the new championship banner at John A. Ryan Arena. The Raiders showed the same spirit that won them the title for most of the game, but the short bench caught up with them in the third period of the 4-2 loss. After Winchester went up 1-0 early in the second period on a goal by Joseph Lepore, Watertown battled back.

Watertown Basketball, Hockey Teams Get Ready for Home Openers

The Watertown winter sports teams will have quite a time coming up with a better encore for the 2015-16 season, after the boys hockey team won its first state title and the girls basketball team made it to the Garden for the EMass final. 

The Raiders hockey and basketball teams will hold their home openers this weekend, with the hoops squads tipping off Friday and the pucksters teams hitting the ice on Saturday. Both sports opened their seasons on the road this week, but only one of four teams came away with a win. Hockey
The defending Div. 3 State Champion boys hockey team is ranked 22nd in the ESPN Boston poll and has experienced forward lines, but an inexperienced defense and goalie. The Raiders fell on the road to Arlington by a score of 6-2 on Wednesday night.

WHS Runner Ranked Among Best in U.S.; Boys’ Hoops, Girls’ Hockey on Streaks

A Watertown runner turned in one of the best runs in the whole nation at a recent indoor track meet. Watertown junior Austin Lin turned in a time of 50.03 in the 400 at the at the recent Boston University mini-meet. The time ranks him the seventh fastest high school runner in the indoor 400 in the United States. The boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams also scored their first wins on Jan. 6, beating Stoneham 46-42 and 44-42, respectively.

Hockey Season Starts Soon – See When Watertown Plays

The Watertown High School boys’ and girls’ hockey teams hit the ice soon. See when you can catch the Raiders. Both teams had runs in the MIAA state tournament last year, and look to return. The teams play their home games at John Ryan Arena, 1 Paramount Place, off of Pleasant Street. The girls share a team with Belmont, and will play some of their games at Belmont High School.

Watertown Hockey Player Will Join Northeastern Women’s Team

Watertown’s Lauren Kelly will be taking to the ice as a Northeastern Husky next season. The defenseman played her high school hockey at The Winchendon School. Her senior year Kelly was a captain for The Winchendon School and helped guide the team to a 28-2-1 record and a trip to the quarterfinals of the NEPSAC tournament, the championship for New England Prep schools, according to an announcement from Northestern. Northeastern women’s hockey coach Dave Flint described Kelly: “Lauren is a big, strong defenseman with a goal-scoring touch. She is a fierce competitor who will be counted on in all situations next year.”
