Mt. Auburn St. Project: Construction Season Over, Off-Season Work Focusing on Drainage

Most of the roadwork on Mt. Auburn Street has stopped for the winter, but there will be some smaller projects during the off-season. See details in the announcement from the City of Watertown. As the construction season has come to a close, off-season work will primarily focus on drainage improvements. This work will continue along Mount Auburn Street toward Watertown Square.

As the construction season winds down, we’d like to take a moment to highlight the work completed along Mount Auburn Street. While the more extensive road work is planned to come back in the spring, MassDOT and Newport Construction has made progress this season in working towards a safer, more accessible, and welcoming street. This year’s efforts focused on two major segments: the Cambridge line to Arlington Street and Arlington Street to Boylston Street.

Parking Restrictions, Lane Shifts for Work on Man Holes, Drainage on Mt. Auburn Street

From Nov. 24 to 26, drivers will see lane shifts and parking restrictions on two stretches of Mt. Auburn Street as crews raise man holes and install drainage. See details in the announcement from the City of Watertown, below. Raising Buried Structures

Crews will be raising buried utility structures, such as manholes and valve boxes, within the newly paved area along Mount Auburn Street between Lloyd Road and Boylston Street.

Detours This Week for Mt. Auburn Street Construction

During the week of Nov. 10 some areas of Mt. Auburn Street will be closed and traffic will be detoured as road reconstruction continues in East Watertown. See details provided by the City of Watertown, below. Milling

Milling (removal of the top layer of pavement) on Mount Auburn Street between Lloyd Road and Boylston Street is scheduled to continue Monday, November 10, 2025.

Construction Crews Will Install Drainage on Mt. Auburn St. This Week

Drainage work will be the focus of the construction on Mt. Auburn Street during the week of June 2-7. See details in the announcement from the City of Watertown. Beginning Monday, June 2, 2025, Newport Construction will resume drainage installation on Mount Auburn Street at the intersections with Kimball Road and Elton Avenue. Traffic and Sidewalk Impacts

During this work, you can expect temporary lane shifts and possibly lane closures, but one travel lane in each direction will remain on Mount Auburn Street.

Temporary Paving Expected to be Completed Next Week

The City of Watertown has initiated work to temporarily level and pave the remainder of Mount Auburn Street next week while we await the completion of the Mt. Auburn Street Project. Originally not anticipated to receive any temporary paving as part of the project, the City has stepped in to fund this work to ensure one of Watertown’s busiest roads is paved for safer, smoother travel in 2024 ahead of the winter season. This work is being accelerated beyond the scope of the ongoing Mt.

Mt. Auburn St. Repaving Between School and Summer St. Starts Next Week

The City of Watertown sent out the following information:

Temporary Paving Expected to be Completed Next Week

Newport Construction will be leveling and laying temporary pavement moving east on Mount Auburn Street, starting at Summer Street and ending just prior to School Street. Both eastbound and westbound lanes will be completed, starting on the eastbound side of the street. The road lines will be restriped once the paving is completed to look the same as it was previously. The work originally scheduled for Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM has been rescheduled due to anticipated rain. It is now expected to take place on Monday, November 25, and Tuesday, November 26, 2024 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Mt. Auburn Street Paving Work This Weekend Will Include Lane Closures & Parking Restrictions

The City of Watertown provided an update on the Mt. Auburn Street road project, including impacts from the weekend paving work. Paving started last week on the first 500 feet from the Cambridge line. Paving work is scheduled to continue from Wednesday, November 6, 2024, through Friday, November 8, 2024, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Additionally, paving will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., as the construction schedule was adjusted to pause work on Election Day. This paving work will include Mount Auburn Street between the Cambridge Line and Arlington Street, as well as the side street entrances in these locations.
