Businesses Air Concerns with Mt. Auburn Street Construction; City Pledges Improved Communication

The past several months have been tough for businesses in Coolidge Square with the road construction and utility work on Mt. Auburn Street. While the project is expected to last another three years, heavy construction is largely done until spring and City and construction officials have committed to improving communication with business owners.

Detours This Week for Mt. Auburn Street Construction

During the week of Nov. 10 some areas of Mt. Auburn Street will be closed and traffic will be detoured as road reconstruction continues in East Watertown. See details provided by the City of Watertown, below. Milling

Milling (removal of the top layer of pavement) on Mount Auburn Street between Lloyd Road and Boylston Street is scheduled to continue Monday, November 10, 2025.

Excavation of the eastbound sidewalk and curbing on Mount Auburn Street between Belmont Street and Arlington Street will continue on Monday, October 20, 2025 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Learn about travel and parking impacts below. Traffic and Sidewalk Impacts

The eastbound sidewalk will be closed for excavation starting on Monday, October 20, 2025 at 7:00 a.m. A bypass sidewalk on the eastbound side will be opened up while this work is being completed.Traffic on Mount Auburn Street will be narrowed and you can expect lane shifts, however traffic will be maintained in both directions. Entrances to driveways and parking lots will be maintained.

Removal of Pavement on Mt. Auburn St. Begins This Week

The process of removing the old asphalt to prepare for the repaving of on Mt. Auburn Street will begin this week. Also, hydrant installation and sidewalk pouring will take place in the East End. Sidewalk concrete installation and pouring will take place on the westbound side of Mount Auburn Street, between Belmont Street and Prentiss Street from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Concrete pouring is scheduled to take place between Belmont Street and Prentiss Street on Monday, September 15, 2025.

This Week’s Mt. Auburn St. Construction Begins After Labor Day

Construction on Mt. Auburn Street will take a day off for Labor Day, and resume with sidewalk and drainage work on Tuesday. See more information in the announcement from the City of Watertown. Sidewalk Concrete Installation

Sidewalk concrete installation and pouring will take place on the westbound side of Mount Auburn Street, between Belmont Street and Keenan Street from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Concrete pouring is anticipated to begin between Belmont Street and Francis Street on Wednesday 9/3/2025. Notices have been provided to the properties directly affected within the pouring area.

UPDATED: Removal of Shade Trees on Mt. Auburn, Keith Street Approved by City Manager

(CORRECTION: The story has been updated to include two areas where trees will be removed. The previous story only referenced Keith Street). A total of 17 shade trees off in East Watertown will be removed as part of the construction projects after City Manager George Proakis gave his approval. The trees to be removed include nine along Mt. Auburn Street as part of the reconstruction of the street and eight on Keith Street located on a property where a home is planned to be built.
