Tanya Donelly & Bill Janovitz to Perform at Mosesian Arts Benefit Honoring Tom Perrotta & the Earfull Series

Mosesian Center for the Arts will hold its annual fundraising benefit on Tuesday, May 21. Themed OUR STORIES, this year’s event will celebrate the stories and talents of several people who have been involved with the arts center in its nearly 22 history. Honorees of the evening’s Mosesian Awards include critically acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Tom Perrotta and the team behind the Earfull Series: Jen Trynin, Tim Huggins, Michael Creamer, and Jon Lupfer. The entertainment for the evening features Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses/The Breeders/Belly) and musician and New York Times best-selling author Bill Janovitz (Buffalo Tom). Entertainment will also include a performance from Mosesian Arts’ upcoming Watertown Children’s Theatre production of Fiddler on the Roof Jr. Tickets include international hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, awards and entertainment on the main stage, and a selection of desserts. Guests will also be among the first to see the accompanying gallery exhibition, Entwined: Visual and Textual Narratives.

Britain’s Got Talent Father-Son Duo Surprise April Break Students With Concert

On April 25, the Mosesian Center for the Arts will welcome Jack & Tim, who were finalists in the Britain’s Got Talent TV show, but some youngsters attending programs at the Arts Center got a sneak peek performance this week. Britain’s Got Talent finalists Jack & Tim surprised young artists and actors at the Mosesian Center for the Arts’ vacation-week program on Thursday (April 18) with a short performance in the art center’s lobby gallery. The father and son pair were there to promote an upcoming concert on Thursday, April 25, on the art center’s main stage, the Charles Mosesian Theater.

Art Exhibit and Performances to Celebrate Women’s Voices at Mosesian Center for the Arts

The Mosesian Center for the Arts at the Arsenal in Watertown has programmed a collection of events celebrating the talents and voices of women in both visual and performing arts. Feminist Art: Contemporary Perspectives opens as a gallery exhibition on March 22 and runs through May 3. SheGrooves: Using Our Voices for Positive Change (March 27), Lil Bit of (Almost) Everything Comedy Showcase (April 12), and Melodies of Ukraine with the Women’s Bandura Ensemble of North America (April 14) are three related events taking the Mosesian Arts stages during the exhibition dates. Feminist Art: Contemporary Perspectives

There is a long line of artists who have created feminist art — Judy Chicago, Faith Wildling, Ana Mendieta, Louise Bourgeois, Barbara Kruger, Betye Saar, Lorna Simpson, and many more. Their work continues to be relevant today as women and other marginalized genders are facing the same issues of oppressive body politics. 

Restriction and lack of reproductive rights were some of the issues addressed by feminist artists in the 1970’s, and reproductive justice issues have had a particularly devastating impact on Black and Indigenous communities. Artists in this exhibition are grappling with the same issues and injustices because of conservative and oppressive polices created in recent years. 

The present-day resurgence in feminist art, as well as an interest in its history and connection to current intersectional feminist political and art activism, has opened a re-examination of themes of the body, particularly the bodies of women and trans individuals, and how it is viewed.

Concert Featuring Pianist Guy Urban Will Benefit Helen Robinson Wright Fund

A concert featuring Guy Urban will benefit the The Helen Robinson Wright Fund at First Parish of Watertown. The concert will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. at First Parish of Watertown, 35 Church St., Watertown. Urban will perform some of his favorite piano pieces and share with the audience why these are favorites of his. The Helen Robinson Wright Fund, named for a Watertown native, assists Watertown neighbors with short-term financial help for housing, food, and utility bills.
