Council Statement: Senior Center Won’t Close; Some Worried About Center’s Focus

No one can pin down where it came from, but rumors have flown recently that the Watertown Senior Center would be closing. Town Council President Mark Sideris made it clear Tuesday night that the center will not close. The Council’s Human Services subcommittee held a meeting in late March to gather information about what people want from the senior center and what qualities they want to see in the new executive director. The meeting ruffled some feathers, however, and some felt that there was an effort to change the mission of the Senior Center. Tuesday night, the report from the meeting was presented.

Join Discussion of the Future of the Senior Center, Services for Older Adults

The Town Council’s Human Services Committee will hold a hearing to discuss the town’s next director of the Watertown Senior Center and the Council on Aging at a public meeting on Monday, March 28 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Auditorium at the Coolidge School Apartments, 319 Arlington St. The following announcement was sent out about the meeting:

Watertown’s search for a new Director of Senior Services is underway, and the Town Council’s Committee on Human Services looks forward to hearing residents’ vision for the Senior Center, including their thoughts on programs for older adults and the qualifications they desire in a new Director. The Council on Aging & Watertown for All Ages are pleased to be collaborating with the Human Services Committee to provide the community a public forum to share their ideas and priorities with the Town Manager and other town officials. Participants will learn about the services that are currently provided to those 60 and over in Watertown and examples of offerings available in surrounding communities. During small group discussions, we will envision the future of the Watertown Council on Aging/Senior Center.

Senior Center Bids Farewell to Director After Nearly 3 Decades

Caryl Fox treated Friday, March 6 as just another day at work, but it was her last as director of the Watertown Senior Center and her friends would not let it go without a small celebration. 

About 20 seniors who had been involved at the Senior Center and worked with Fox were joined by former Watertown Town Councilor and Governor’s Councilor Marilyn Petitto Devaney. She brought with her a proclamation from the Governor’s Council declaring March 6, 2016 as Caryl Fox Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Fox refused any interview, saying, “I just do my work.” She thanked those who had turned out to wish her a happy retirement. “Thank you for the proclamation,” Fox said.

It may be the depth of winter, but the Watertown Senior Center is full of activities this month. The Senior Center sent out the following announcement:

ZUMBA GOLD CLASSES NOW AT THE SENIOR CENTER! Zumba Gold features exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active older participant, as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. Before they know it, their energy levels are soaring! Joanna Grubel, certified Zumba Gold instructor, holds classes on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 – 10:30.

“Exploring the Charles River” can serve as a guide in planning a variety of excursions, while providing a brief history of the Boston area for the reader’s pleasure. Discover scenic bridges and walkways with the many natural and historic sites the river offers; from urban settings to hidden coves and wetland areas, for some scenic new adventures. Join us as author, Kathleen Rowe, talks to us about photographing, researching, and writing about the different areas of this ever-changing waterway – the Charles River.

Watertown Senior Center Needs Items for Giant Indoor Yard Sale

The Watertown Senior Center’s Giant Indoor Yard Sale is back and they seek items to be donated. 

The yard sale is Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Watertown Senior Center, 31 Marshall St. Admission is only 25 cents and all proceeds will benefit the Senior Center. The Senior Center needs your donations of toys, books, costume jewelry, kitchen items, etc. (please, no clothes, shoes, tools or electronics). Bring donations to the Senior Center starting Monday, April 28, between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Volunteers are also needed to sort, set up, and sell. Call 617-972-6490 for more information.
